I am teaching Sunday school (as I've mentioned before) this year. Anyway, I needed some help figuring out the Saints and Name Days for the various kids.

So, the Name day for a child named Matheos is November 16th, would St. Matthew be the Saint associated with this name? I need to find an icon online that I can include of this Saint for our bulletin board.

How about Angelos on November 8th?

Thanks for any help!

Angelos....doesn't that have to do with angels? Named after the angels? Not sure.

Matheos...hmmmm.....Matthias was the 12th Apostle, taking the place of Judas. Maybe he's named after him?

You could probably get a calender that lists all, or at least most of the Saints covered on each particular day, I would think.

If it were me, I'd probably ask the parents. Just cus, you know...I figure...they named the kid so...they should know.

Maybe that's why I don't teach Sunday School. :\

I'd ask the parents, because people often name for a particular Saint with that name rather than the name in general (which usually gets the nameday of the best known Saints) for instance John could be:

The Apostle
The Forerunner & Baptist
of Kronstadt
of Shanghai & San Francisco
the Desert Father

you get the idea.

Send home something this week asking the parents, or ask when they come to drop off/pick up their kids?

For Angelos, the parents mentioned Nov 8th as the nameday but didn't mention what saint is associated with the name. So, I suppose it is the Synaxis of the Archangels. Thanks, Coralie!

ikonographics, the Christopher in the class seems to celebrate his Nameday on Dec 25th. I didn't even realize there was a May 9th Christopher Nameday as well. What's the difference?

If the parents don't know the child's nameday the usual practice would be to go with the most commonly known Saint of that name, or one special to the parents. Mostly this goes a heirarchy - anything related to the Theotokos or Christ are automatically assigned to them, St John the Baptist, the Apostles, the Angels, and then down through the ranks.
