• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I had suffered with internal hemorrhoids for years. You know you have these when it feels like there is a small balloon/s up inside your rectum. They can itch and make one use a lot more toilet paper to get cleaned up than one normally would use after a bowel movement. Hemorrhoid creams help a little temporarilly. I believe that these are not treatable, but are progressive. They become prolapsed. When this occurs these hemorrhoids protrude outside the anus like very small purple balloons. They make it impossible to stay cleaned up because their swelling does not allow the anus to close all the way and leakage and odor results. There may not be much, if any, pain or bleeding associated with these kinds of hemorrhoids so doctors may be reluctant to offer surgery. However, Doctors do have the green light to offer surgery if these hemorrhoids cause their patient to have to alter their life. This was my case (for years). When one believes that surgery is needed, they need to make sure that a Colon-Rectal Surgeon is consulted to examine them and perform the surgery....not a General Surgeon. The tissue of the anus is so sensitive that it requires this kind of medical Specialist. What many Rectal Surgeons prefer to do just before they perform the hemorrhoidectomy is to perform a colonoscopy. In this case, the patient would have drank a solution the day before that would have 'cleaned out' their digestive system. As a plus, then, the next day/s following their surgery, they would not run the risk of their bowels becoming 'impacted' after consuming their next meals. If one is not going to be getting a colonoscopy before there hemorrhoidectomy, I believe it is absolutely essential that they drink the MiraLax (or other solution) to clean them out. The literature that they give you says that you should not eat or drink anything prior to 12 hours before the surgery if not getting the Colonoscopy. This got me into trouble. I should have drank the solution anyway. My bowels 'impacted' . This is when the bowel gets paralyzed, yet you get great sensations that you are on the verge of defecation. A person just out of hemorrhoid surgery and suffering from this cannot undergo an enema. Therfore, they must seek medical attention to be given a solution that quickly empties their bowels....such as GoLytely. It is said that the pain pills prescribed to these patients can cause impactation...along with the body's trauma from the surgery. So it is essential that Milk of Magnesia be taken after breakfast and in the evening for at least a week after the surgery. Sometimes, even a month after hemorrhoid surgery....a hemorrhoid/s may develop at a different location around the anus. This also happened to me. I went back into surgery to have it removed. I had to almost argue with the Surgeon to get him to do this. He wanted to prescribe an ointment since it wasn't an Internal hemorrhoid but a Thrombosed External hemorrhoid. I was not about to endure these things again after just going through the painful surgery to get them removed. Thankfully, Colon-Rectal Surgeons keep their patients overnight to keep them medicated after surgery. The tissue of the anus is so sensitive that this is a necessity. This last surgery was extremely mild compared to the first, so I will be returning to work this coming Monday (Lord willing). I will do no lifting at all this time even though I was restricted to 25 Lbs last time. I do hope that I never have to endure this problem ever again.

Hi there,
I have to say seriously that hemorrhoids is a great annoying disease. This made me likely mad a few years ago. I could not walk, could not move and even, my daily necessary tasks were postponed for an unlimited time that I didn't know.
I pray nobody suffers from hemorrhoids anymore.

I will suggest people to take natural treatment for hemorrhoids because it is simple, non expensive and does its work in a very short time.
Thank you...........

I believe it is absolutely essential that they drink the MiraLax (or other solution) to clean them out.
This is incorrect. MiraLax is a stool softener that only contains polyethylene glycol and should not be used as a means for cleaning your bowels out prior to a colonoscopy or similar procedure. The specialist doctor will prescribe the correct solution for you to drink so you don't end up with an imbalance in your electrolytes.

If a stool softener is necessary post-surgery, why on earth would they take Milk of Magnesia instead of MiraLax? This makes no sense. Products that use things such as Magnesium Hydroxide, Magnesium Citrate, etc., are much harsher and are typically used for "near" immediate relief of constipation. Also, it should be mentioned that depending on how long your bowels have been blocked, it might be better to go to the ER because you can very easily end up with a perforated colon by using these products(including MiraLax). When you get blocked up, fecal matter tends to back up into the colon in the area where the ascending and transverse colon meet. When you use any of the aforementioned products, you can in effect turn part of the built up fecal matter in the transverse colon into a "spear" that gets pushed into and perforates the colon in the region where the transverse and descending colon meet. This can also happen in other areas of the colon as well.

Opioid-based pain medications tend to reduce/slow the frequency of peristaltic waves, which are the smooth muscle contractions that move consumed food through the digestive tract, particularly the small intestines and colon. As a result, more water is pulled out of the feces since it sits in your colon longer, which causes it to harden up resulting in an impaction. Again, the simple solution is to take MiraLax once a day to keep your stool soft and adjust your diet accordingly(meaning avoid foods such as cheese, peanut butter and such that may cause a hard stool). Anyone that is going to be on Vicodin 2-3x pd or anything stronger for more than a couple of days should use a stool softener.

To keep things at bay:

In a small essential oil bottle place:
10 drops of Tea Tree essential oil
10 drops of Cypress essential oil
10 drops of Myrrh essential oil
1/2 cup of a carrier oil such as Almond oil, Castor, or Jojoba oil.

Mix well. Use 2 times a day till severity is reduced, then once daily to keep skin from drying which makes this condition worse. The above should last you a little while before you have to mix another batch.
Obviously, do not contaminate the bottle by touching yourself then placing cotton or fingers (whatever you used to apply) back on the bottle!

Do not buy essential oils at Walmart and such. Those are not the real thing! Purchase on Amazon or reputable health food store. You may think it's expensive, but consider what Rx and surgery costs.

Another recipe:
10 drops of Cypress essential oil
10 drops of Frankincense essential oil
10 drops of Helichrysum essential oil
10 drops of Lavender essential oil
3/4 cup of a carrier oil such as Almond oil, Castor, or Jojoba oil.
Essential oils are never to be used on any skin full strength! They must be diluted with a carrier oil.

*Consult your physician before treating anything with essential oils.

If you suffering from piles then use should try these home remedies for hemorrhoids.

1. Sitz baths
Generally, experts recommend people with painful hemorrhoids sit in warm water for 15 minutes, several times a day — especially after a bowel movement.

2. Witch hazel
Witch hazel is reputed to reduce pain, itching and bleeding until hemorrhoids fade out. There isn’t much scientific support for its use but it does contain tannins and oils that may help bring down inflammation and slow bleeding. Supporters say it tightens the skin as a natural anti-inflammatory.

3. Apple cider vinegar
Some people say that apple cider vinegar can bring instant relief to hemorrhoids, reducing itching and pain.

4. Psyllium husk
Psyllium husk is a supplement that helps increase your fiber intake, and softens stools to make them easier to pass. Be careful not to increase fiber too much, too quickly, as it may also cause gas or stomach cramping.

5. Aloe vera
The anti-inflammatory properties of aloe vera may help soothe inflammation of hemorrhoids. Although research isn’t available for its use for hemorrhoids specifically, it has shown some benefit for other inflammatory skin conditions.

6. Tea tree oil
Some people say the antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil may reduce swelling and itching caused by hemorrhoids. Some early research found that a gel made with tea tree oil decreased symptoms, but studies are lacking.
