"Dad, I have a big secret to tell you."
"Okay, what is it."
"But don't tell mom, because she tells everyone."
"Okay, well, I can't promise that, it depends on what it is."
"Wellllllll, I have a big....crush...on...so and so." (kid in her class)
"Then you're going to have to bring him by so I can talk to him."
"WHAT??"
"I have to make sure his intentions are honorable."
"No dad, that will embarrass me. He's a nice kid."
"Okay, so what's the issue? You're going to have crushes, it's normal."
"He only likes to hang out with his bros. And he treats me like a bro."
"He's 7 years old, honey. Bros is good."
"But it stinks being stuck in the bro zone."

...the bro zone.

When my son was 3 years old in pre school there was a girl that tried to kiss him. I even saw her one day acting like she saw her momma act with her boyfriend. When my son's mom found out about that girl she had a talk with the teacher about it. Although the problem persisted, there were always girls chasing after him. They would tell me the same thing, they were upset that he was not as interested in them as they were in him. Although maybe the bro thing is accurate. He was active and on the move and maybe they were not interested in the guy sort of stuff he liked to do.

She's a pretty smart kid - in the gifted program - and lots of stuff makes sense to her earlier than for others. lol
An intellectually "smart kid" where academic things make sense is very different from being an emotionally "smart kid" that understands things like "But it stinks being stuck in the bro zone."

The latter sounds like puberty hormones talking. When those hormones start kicking in and the body is about to start changing we get the urge for romantic involvement, which almost always starts with crushes.
