Ex Liberal member (eg our Centre-Right party, Moira Deeming (who is a Women's Right advocate) has won $300K and costs against her former party leader and current opposition Liberal leader John Pesutto. During a protest that Deeming attended, it was gate-crashed by some Nazis, her group was a Woman's Rights group had no knowledge of the Nazi turning up. Pesutto created a really poor dossier to make his case but it was a really poorly crafted, which only quoted far left sources and a paper linked to the Scottish SNP, who actually were linked to the NAZI's in WW2. Pesutto is currently leading in the polls in the state of Victoria. Victoria is the most progressive state in Australia. Deeming is a committed Christian, pro-life, supports maintaining woman's spaces and places. Her family has deep roots in the Labor Party and is a Maori.

The Liberal Party and some of its key members have lost their way, confusing right-wing conservatism with genuine liberalism.

I don't know anything about either Moira Deeming or John Pesutto, since I live in Queensland about 1500 kms north. Even in our own state I'd have limited knowledge of most local politicians, apart from a few.

But I'd look askance at a comment that Victoria is the "most progressive state in Australia". As Philip-B stated "by what measure?"

It reminds me of the slogan for Queensland car number plates thought up by a previous administration viz. "Queensland - the Smart State". I though it was ridiculous then and I think it is ridiculous now. There was some truth in the previous promo of "The Sunshine State" since we do get a lot of sunshine (although lately we've had a fair bit of rainy weather as well), but I don't have much time for political hubris.

Obviously the law court thought there was justice in her claim, but I don't know why John Pesutto should have been blamed for her protest being gate crashed by Nazis. He may not have had any more knowledge of their plans than she did.

And yet the constitution says that quarantine is a commonwealth responsibility. Section 51.9

The states and Commonwealth can delegate tasks to each other.
Our constitution says, "intercourse among the States, whether by means of internal carriage or ocean navigation, shall be absolutely free." but that didn't stop the states blocking movement between states.

I know I am going to step on a lot of toes by saying this. But as Christians are we not supposed to be subject to the ordinances of man. The whole COVID rebellion in my opinion makes Christians look bad in the eyes of the world and makes people mistrust Christians.

Rom 13:1-2 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.

In his book 'Plans For Your Good - A Prime Minister's Testimony of God's Faithfulness' by Scott Morrison who was the Australian Prime Minister during the Covid outbreak, he mentions Covid and the border closures between states.

"In Australia, like the United States and Canada, our state governments have the constitutional authority for public health, not the federal government...... We didn't always agree on everything. in the latter stages of the pandemic in 2021, our state jurisdictions took the lockdowns too far, particularly in Victoria. My government also did not support some of the impractical internal border controls on Australia's east coast, although we were wrong to have opposed border closures on the west coast, especially in the courts, during the early stages of the pandemic. .... Wider vaccine mandates were imposed unilaterally by some state Labor governments, without the support of my government or the official national medical advice. The federal government had no constitutional powers to override these mandates. We were similarly opposed to closure of schools by the states, and our opposition to this action was also supported by the national medical advice.

But we can't claim to have gotten everything right. No one in the world did. .... In a crisis you never get everything right.... Compared to the death rates from COVID in other developed countries with similar health systems, we saved 30,000 lives. To illustrate, the New York Times calculated that nine hundred thousand lives would have been saved in the United States if it had the same death rate as Australia...."

The Covid pandemic was a time of world wide stress, and nobody got it all right in the way they handled it. There were differences in the way the Australian federal and state governments handled things, and they didn't always agree.

That's the way it goes.
