Baloney. It was done because they believed bar Kochba to be the Messiah in earnest.
Possibly in part, but he had other motives. The following quotes

"During the Bar Kochba Rebellion in about 135 A.D., Jewish Christians who were called Nazarenes at the time fought alongside Bar Kochba to drive the Romans out of Israel. When it looked as though the Jews would win, Akiva declared that Bar Kochba was the messiah."
"Although I can’t prove it, I have a hunch that Akiva harbored residual resentment toward the Messiah a hundred years after His crucifixion and resurrection. He saw an opportunity to inflict what he thought would be a mortal wound to the growing Nazarene community and he took it."
