The Senate majority leader is married to Elaine Chao, who serves as transportation secretary

Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell slammed his Democratic challenger Amy McGrath's new ad against him as a “racist” attack against his wife.

In a campaign ad, McGrath claims that trade deals brokered by McConnell “made China richer, their military stronger, they’re spying on us and they didn’t stop the coronavirus.”

“Oh, and Mitch made millions from China,” McGrath’s ad continued.

The Kentucky Republican’s rebuttal ad claimed that “nobody is tougher on China” than he is and the ad was actually a “racist attack on Mitch McConnell’s wife Elaine Chao.”

Elaine Chao's family owns a shipping company worth hundreds of millions of dollars. When Chao's mother died in 2007, her father gave McConnell between $5 and $25 million (financial disclosure form allow people to put things like this in a "range.")

Foremost's 33 ship fleet, privately held by the Chao family, is worth $1.2 billion. The NY Times investigation referenced in the link shows how the Chao/McConnell connection has benefited Foremost's business--which has not suffered the losses other shippers have during the trade wars and COVID.

I don't look at McGrath's criticism as racist. It's the nepotism factor--profiting the McConnells and foremost handily. She is right to point out McConnell's $1.2 billion conflict of interest.

So criticizing a foreign nation and a possible improper relationship between them and a politician's family is racist? Probably not a very safe attack to launch, if you're a republican.

Elaine Chao represents China? How about that, all this time I've thought that she is an American and represents the USA.

How quaint. When it comes to crying "racism" these days, much less than that is required.

Once one side starts in with insults that are completely disconnected from facts--and gets away with doing so--it sets new guideposts for everyone else.
