Missouri is the latest state to propose banning abortion on babies with beating hearts

JEFFERSON CITY, Missouri, January 16, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – The Missouri legislature is slated to debate legislation that would protect preborn babies from abortion as soon as their heartbeats can be detected, as part of a national trend toward more comprehensive pro-life laws that protect babies early in pregnancy.

Introduced by state Sen. Andrew Koenig and state Rep. Nick Schroer, H.B. 126 (S.B. 139 in the Senate) requires abortionists to test for a fetal heartbeat prior to abortion. If one can be found, the woman seeking the abortion must be given the opportunity to hear it and the abortion cannot be committed except in cases of “medical emergency.”

Women would not be punishable, but abortionists who don’t perform the test would face six-month suspensions of their medical licenses and a $1,000 fine. Physicians who do test and abort the child anyway would permanently lose their licenses and be barred from applying for a new one.

“While there are different perspectives in the medical community, it is generally accepted that a preborn child's heart starts beating by approximately 22 days after conception, and that the heartbeat can be detected by an early ultrasound exam from 6-8 weeks into the pregnancy,” the Missouri Family Policy Council notes.

They need to ban abortion upon conception, not simply when there is a heartbeat. This bill in the Missouri legislature doesn't go far enough. Just ban abortion. It's murder to kill a baby at any stage in the womb, heartbeat or not.

Agreed, but this will move the line back while they are sorting that out. If they don't pass this law, we will lose even more lives in the interim.

It is like clearing out a building with an active shooter. Do you wait until you can get everybody out at once, or do you evacuate as many as you can, as quickly as you can?

I agree. It seems the incrementalists are moving the ball at the state level. But you are correct on demand abortion is the premeditated murder of human beings.

I am against abortion beyond the twentieth week except in very rare extreme circumstances.. Otherwise I believe that abortion should be legal, it should be safe, it should be available and it should be the woman’s informed choice but most important of all --- it should be rare. In conclusion, we should always keep in mind that there are no more powerful abortifacients in the world than poverty and ignorance.

Familiar with your opinion. Yet there is no moral argument supporting something called "informed choice."

I've always thought that for a Christian, thanks to the advancements in science that we have today, that the abortion question should almost be a non-issue.

Meaning, we know Biblically that all human beings are created in the image of God and possess inherent moral worth and value.

We know Biblically there is no distinction between a human being and a human person where a human being has to become a human person to have moral worth and value. All human beings at all times in their life are created in the image of God and possess inherent moral worth and value.

When you take this truth and place it against the scientific fact that a new human being comes into existence at fertilization, the logical conclusion is that from fertilization, humans are created in the image of God and possess inherent moral worth and value.

Therefore, abortion for convenience reasons, which make up 98.5% of all abortions should be considered immoral.
