Hello brothers and sisters, I would love to minister and serve in the church and teach. Would a theology degree at Houston Baptist University be necessary or helpful? If you could expound some on your answer that would be great. I grew up in a secular home and came to Christ myself so I don't have much support in my family. Would love direction...

Study to so thyself approved. Having a theological degree of some sort can greatly increase your chances of being hired as a preacher in a church. If you desire to just speak occasionally...study and watching those whose speaking style you like, should be enough.
