  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What are some facts that even though you cognitively understand the processes and such behind it, it still blows your mind to think about. These can be scientific, historical, mathematical, theological, etc. Here's some of mine...

- The South Pole has a completely different set of stars than the North Pole.
- Nobody knows who founded Rome
- The universe is approximately 13,800,000,000 years old.

The water we drink and bath in everyday is the same water that has cycled around our planet since before there was life on Earth and it wasn't always here.

2+2=4. Try to grasp your mind around that one. I just could never understand why it couldn't be 5. I agreed it was 4 but couldn't see why it couldn't be 5. And perhaps that part of me struggling to grasp it was partly right, because I believe there are some mathematicians who have tried to at least make arguments for simple math like that not equaling what it should or seems. Maybe math isn't as straightforward as it seems with our eyes, maybe theres something else out there besides just 2+2 equaling 4? Maybe not in this universe but surely in a potential universe it could, i'm sure equal something besides 4.#DeepThinking

What blows my mind is how something as hugely massive as an airplane can actually fly (well, if all goes according to plan, that is :D).
I find massive ships being able to float just as mind blowing.

Yeah I heard about some mathematician attempting that.

Might sound stupid, although I do think questioning the mundane things can lead to new ways of viewing the road down the line.

So, Jonah got swallowed by a large fish...

How on Earth did he manage inside a fish! Especially, how did the oxygen work inside it? Did Jonah eat or drink in there? After leaving, did he decide to bathe right away from the fishy smell, or did he just go straight to Ninevah covered in fish guts? Was he comfortable in the fish? I'd imagine not, but I will never know because some things are just too incomprehensible.

I mean, I know God was teaching him a lesson, and perhaps God used his power kept him alive in there for 3 days, but seriously, I kinda wanna know how he survived inside that fish for three days, and then there's the part of me that's okay not knowing that information.

I kind of imagine in heaven we will able to see such historical events like this that took place. I mean how cool would it be if we could see all the miracles and things of that sort on blu ray in heaven. It's definitely within Gods power to make it happen. Would be pretty kewl.

The " cubit " that Biblical temples are described with, is actually a unit used in Sumerian / Akkadian / Babylonian astronomy, used to measure angular distance between two occulting bodies

iow, an eclipse

That's one of the reasons the Book of Revelation writers made numerous mentions of an eclipse

That's why all the years of arguments about exactly what cubit the Bible speaks of have basically amounted to a pile of nothing, they're debates that don't even apply to the actual subject

Dostoevsky struggled with that one too in Notes from Underground. The speaker says
"Two times two makes four—why, in my opinion, it’s mere insolence. Two times two makes four stands there brazenly with its hands on its hips, blocking your path and spitting at you. I agree that two times two makes four is a splendid thing; but if we’re going to lavish praise, then two times two makes five is sometimes also a very charming little thing. "

If a famed Russian author agrees with you, whom would I be to argue? :p

1) That you can take something that is so small that nobody has ever seen it, put it in half, and cause an explosion that takes out a city. (nuclear fission)

2) Human capability to figure out that you can do this and actually do it. There is something scary in our intelligence. I am convinced that as a race we might very well be too smart for our own good. I don't expect us to be around for very many centuries because at the current phase we seem to once in every decade figure out a new potential way to wipe our own race out for good.

Microorganisms in the human body outnumber human cells 10 to 1.

What blows my mind : Humans. We have created immense, intricate machines which can fly, sail, generate atomical explosions, even take us into space. Given enough time and experimentation, We can dissect and understand most dimensions of anatomy, psychology, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, cosmology and everything in between.

Given all of this, and every accomplishment I could write about in and endless amount of words - our greatest physical weakness are the microscopic organisms which outnumber us by a quantity we can only theorize.

Also, the fact that every day we have multiple near death experiences as a species due to spacial and earthly powers. Seriously, at any time the earth and life as we know can end and there is a lengthy list of choices for how we go.

Depending on what you believe, this is either a testament to God's power and vigilance, or humanity's dumb luck. Maybe both!

In spite of ourselves, this universe is so fascinating.

That a star exploded billions of years ago to form the nebula that eventually came to be our solar system and everything in it, along with our entire existence in the universe.
