Mikvah means a "pool" or "gathering" of fresh water. Mosaic law mandated many ceremonial water purification rituals/ablutions.

To be clear, it wasn't for the purpose bathing. One was to already have bathed, washed his hair, pared his fingernails etc. Other purification rituals required only washing the of the hands, another washing of the hands & feet only.

A mikvah had to have a source of running water, such as a spring, or fresh water, such as rain. Water from pools & ponds were regarded as unsuitable, for the cleansing/purifying process.

Full immersion Mikveh examples: women before marriage, after child bearing, her monthly cycle, men after a sexual discharge, contact with any dead animal or person, every priest for ordination, anyone wanting to convert to Judaism, eating unclean foods, contact with a gentile (Jn 18:28) could make a Jew ceremonially UNCLEAN, to name a few.

Above Mikvah clean/unclean in context: a change of status. Once the Mikvah was completed one had completed a 'change of status.'

One piece of furniture in the Temple. Was the Laver, or Bronze Basin. A large bowl filled with fresh water. The priests were to wash, hands & feet (1/2 Mikveh) before entering the Holy Place & before & after many other duties as well.

Ex 40:12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water.

Every year the High Priest was required to begin the Day of Atonement: At first dawn to bath & put on his golden priestly garments. This day the High Priest was required to: full/immersion/Mikveh 5 times. Other Priestly duties that day required (1/2 Mikveh) the ceremonial cleansing/purifying/washing of his hands & feet 10 times!

Num 8:
5 the Lord spake to Moses, saying, 6 Take the Levites from among the children of Israel & cleanse them.
(MY NOTE: Separate the Priests & wash/cleanse/purify them in (next verse) water)

7 And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean.
(MY NOTE: Wash/purifying/cleanse themselves with water & have them wash/purifying/cleanse their cloths)

2 Ki 5:1 (NOTE: Naaman captain of the Syrian armies was a leper. In Scripture, leprosy was the height of being UNCLEAN)
(MY NOTE; Vs 10 The Prophet Elisha sent a messenger, saying, Go and wash/full immersion in Jordan 7 times. Long story short, Naaman follows Elisha instructions & he immerses unclean & rises up CLEAN!)

These ceremonial/ritual sacrifices & cleansing's were repeated over & over & over again.

The ceremonial ritual purifying of Mikvah is the origin & a shadow of: Christs one time new covenant baptism/immersion with His Holy Spirit.

Jer 17:13 O Lord, the hope of Israel, All who abandon You will be shamed. Those who turn away on earth will be written down, Because they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living waters.
(MY NOTE: The hope of Israel is the Lord. He is the fountain of living waters. Also see Jn 4:10, 7:37, 38, 39, Rev 22:17)

Jesus and only Jesus can cleanse/purify/baptize believers (Matt 3:11, Lk 3:16, Mk 1:8, Acts 11:16) with His eternal salvation sealing (2 Cor 1:22, 2 Tim 1:14, 2 Cor 5:5.) indwelling Holy Spirit.

We by faith placed in Jesus sin atoning work. Are cleansed/washed/purified ONCE by our High Priest. Via the only substance that can wash the sin stain off a soul. The imputed sinless shed blood of our Great God & Savior, Jesus the Christ: Rev 1:5, 7:14, 22:14. To whom be all praise, honor & glory. Amen
