See, that’s why it’s harmful to cast doubt on the “free press”.
In our society, we must have a common repository of “facts” for both the day-to-day happenings and the longer term items that linger over months or years, (or yea, verily, over decades, “immigration”).
While some bias is normal and expected, the facts remain the facts.
Some facts are uncovered only by assuring the source won’t get public exposure unless compelled to do so by court order, (and then only after a vigorous defense and perhaps “contempt of court” time for recalcitrant reporters).
Just like in Old Testament Times, the New York Times requires at least one corroborating verification for each fact, or set of facts.
The “free press” holds a “public trust” to only tell us true things.
We, in turn, trust that they’ll be faithful witnesses to those truths that they “print”.
When this trust erodes, then no-one can really be sure what “truths” are true.
Then “truth” belongs to the loudest, the meanest, the ones who desire power over all: Tyranny!
