Mental Illness in family members

Anyone know much about schizophrenia?  I need to talk to someone about something that came up in spiritual direction tonight.

My uncle is schizophrenic, but I don't know much about it. I think that his problems stem from brain damage occuring during birth. My family has a history of mental illness, but not schizophrenia, so we all just kind of assume that it occured at the time of his retardation.
