Theodore McCarrick, ex-cardinal of the Catholic Church, ex-archbishop of Washington DC, ex-priest thankfully defrocked, has gotten away without criminal prosecution for any of his crimes. He is 'no longer competent' to stand trial.

This king-maker was highly influential in the creation of numerous bishops, archbishops, and cardinals. Pope Francis is in a very real way McCarrick's pope, as the king-maker pushed hard for the Argentinian cardinal to become pope after papa Benedict resigned.

I am upset that he got away with it. No, I agree that one has to be competent to stand trial. But he got away with so many debauchings over so long a time and the legal system in the USA couldn't or wouldn't do a thing. Bishop Lopes mentioned that his debauching was not a secret to the US bishops. Rod Dreher had the information but waited for someone else to report it, and in the meantime left the Catholic Church because nobody else would do anything, while he did nothing. McCarrick had his fingers in the New American Bible editing, in policy on sexual abuse, on the Land O Lakes revolt of Catholic universities and colleges, the Vatican China policy, and so much more. His accomplishments have been a disaster for the Catholic Church. Worst his debauching of seminarians and his normalization of the Lavender Mafia within the US episcopate.

He got away with it. His friends known or unknown to us protected him well. I am discouraged.

Where is McCarrick these days? Prison?
If in prison/confinement, how long has he been there?
Was he having mental difficulties before going to prison/confinement?
Or did this condition just develop since charges were brought against him?

If we wait long enough, many elderly persons will eventually develop cognitive issues ...

He was in Kansas. Some lesser known monastery. Not sure where he is now or if he has been there all the time.

Never served a day in prison, nor even in jail. He has never even gone to trial. And he has escaped all of that now.

What gets me is the glacially slow process when it was pretty obvious they had to act fast before he either died or lost his competence.

Probably wasn't just about protecting him - but all the higher ups that would have been exposed if it went to trial. Possibly would have included a few popes.

Even Judas had regret - I have yet to see that here.

There is a big part of me that would like to come back - but these things don't help.

Doubts about coming back? I did too, many years ago. But Peter had it right:
"Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God." [Jn 6:68-69]
And that was before Peter knew about Judas! Now we see Judas and his progeny among us, increasingly clearly. But God cannot lie, and He will be with us "until the close of the age." At the close of the age? He will be with us then, closer than ever, because we will be closer than ever to Him, in those days.

I understand, but we are meant to get and to be "discouraged" - losing hope and becoming hope-less in this broken and dying world. The Cross teaches us that and of course much more. Thank God for the virtue of hope - supernatural hope - hope that is realistic and proven by and through that very Cross.

No - it's not doubts. It's longing that the Catholic Church would return to the ways of the first 1000 years. I don't doubt I made the right choice.

I thank God for the presence in the Church over the last 1000 years, of revealed Truth that the first thousand did not have: He has showed much, of great value. Through Thomas Aquinas (in the 1200's) and John of the Cross (in the 1500's) most specifically, but many other saints as well. There is a treasure of Truth and holiness entrusted to this Church that a thimble-full of which overwhelms all that the evil one has done.

You should come back. These things do not help, I agree. But then it’s like walking away because of Judas. Jesus hand picked Judas after all. What a mess. Who could trust any apostle considering that? Yet the remainder were strengthened and the rest is history.

He knew all of the old anti-Catholic canards but became Catholic when he discovered the traditional faith. Now he’s not going back even with the obvious problems we are facing. The Catholic Church is more like it was in its first 1000 years than any alternative available. The Orthodox have a similar claim but they have their changes too. And the Greek and Russian Orthodox are out of communion at the moment so which branch is wrong? The Catholic Church has preserved and will preserve traditional Christianity better than the rest. Others say they are pristine but they either are fossilized or cantankerous or they make up a lot along the way.

Of course, it would be good to have you come back.

But if these things trouble you now, they will still trouble you when you come back. Maybe more so.

I was strongly motivated to revert, and recently did.
But it is sometimes hard, even for me, to hold on to that motivation, when I see all the bad stuff.

I think it would help me greatly if I could get into a Traditional Catholic Church, but there are none near me.
If you have one near to you, you really might want to try it.

There are many Catholic Churches near me, but most are struggling. Modernism has nearly destroyed them.
It's been very discouraging to me. I didn't come into the Church to become lukewarm.

Yes, there is so much more to the Traditional Church than just the Latin language at Mass, so much that changed with Vatican II ...
and we are seeing many of the fruits of Vatican II in the things we are now seeing in the Church.

Maybe I am saying too much, but you seem like a sincere inquirer. I have been, and am, also.
So I feel the need to 'prepare' you abit for what you will probably encounter, too, should you convert/revert.

To remain on-fire about Catholicism, I find I must continue to "fuel the flame" of desire by continuing my own pursuit of it thru more traditional media, more traditional Catholic writings, more 'traditional' forums like this one. I haven't yet been able to find the Catholicism I am looking for, offline. I'm beginning to doubt that I ever will, and will need to settle for what is available to me., "supplementing" it the way that I am.

True Catholicism is a beautiful thing. It is definitely worth pursuing.
But also, be prepared to be disappointed abit, when you go searching for a local Church that represents it the way you think that it should ...

Many churches, of all denominations, are struggling these days with issues.
I have yet to find a perfect church, and have been in many of them.
We each just have to decide what imperfections we can live with ...
