  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Are you not seeing the greek text on this thread?
What do these look like on your end?'
Ἐπειδήπερ πολλοὶ ἐπεχείρησαν ἀνατάξασθαι διήγησιν περὶ τῶν πεπληροφορημένων ἐν ἡμῖν πραγμάτων,

επειδηπερ πολλοι επεχειρησαν αναταξασθαι διηγησιν περι των πεπληροφορημενων εν ημιν πραγματων

I'm seeing your Greek fine, because it's unicode.

Thanks, I don't know much about inner workings of computers.

LLOJ uses a English letter form of greek that I just can't get the hang of reading. It's greek to me or something.

LLOJ uses an out-of-date technology (which never worked in Firefox), namely the use of "Symbol" font.

If you copy his pseudo-Greek to Microsoft Word and convert it to "Symbol" font, it magically turns into real Greek (though without accents).

I admit, the pseudo-Greek makes my head hurt -- I tend to prefer real Greek (πραγματων) or proper English transliteration (pragmatōn).

Most modern computers allow the full Greek character set with accents, using "unicode," so the pseudo-Greek comes mostly from very old websites.

Beta is the second letter of the Greek alphabet (coming after alpha, hence "alphabet"). It is written β (capital Β) and pronounced like "b" in English.

I've heard modern greeks and some moderns reading koine greek pronouncing beta as "v".

There's been a shift in the sound of Greek over 2,000 years. If a modern Greek wants to say "b," they write "μπ."

Also, several vowels get given the same sound in modern Greek.

And of course, meanings have changed too, so a modern Greek dictionary is no use for Koine.

They've even translated the Bible from Greek (Koine) into Greek (modern).

This word for "prison" (δεσμωτήριον, Strong's G1201) also occurs in Acts 5:21,23 and Acts 16:26.

LSJ also has the word in Herodotus, Thucydides, and Plato: "For as it is, if somebody should seize hold of you or anyone else at all of your sort, and drag you off to prison (εἰς τὸ δεσμωτήριον ἀπάγοι), asserting that you were guilty of a wrong you had never done, you know you would be at a loss what to do with yourself, and would be all dizzy." (Gorgias, 486a)

I'd link that to your previous with:

While in prison, John heard of the works of Christ and sent two of his disciples, ... asking him, "Are you the one coming or are we to expect another?"

Remember, this is the sentence that started in verse 2. "ειπεν" is the main verb.

I was thinking something like that. I guess laziness and that the previous verse is so many pages ago stopped me. I put a comma after verse 2 just so that I could link it to verse 3, but then I didn't link them. Sorry.

Matthew 11:3

ειπεν αυτω συ ει ο ερχομενος η ετερον προσδοκωμεν
saying-to him you are the coming or another we-are expecting
asking him, "Are you the one coming or are we to expect another?"

Thanks for catching that.

Wrong word, I'm afraid. This is the appropriate entry in LSJ:

δεσμ-ωτήριον , τό,
A. prison, Th.6.60, Pl.Grg.486a, D.9.60, etc.; “δ. ἀνδρῶν” Hdt.3.23: pl., = Lat.ergastula, Plu.TG8.
