There seems to be a strong tendency in the USA for the news media to explain such things away as not being relevant and to prefer to attribute such incidents to other motives. Perhaps it has to do with some official News Media policy, some government admonition to avoid it or a personal fear of being accused of fomenting social unrest?

They'd probably get even more social unrest if they blatantly deny what is in front of them (and all of us at the same time). Just imagine this:

A group of white guys kidnap a disabled black guy and then start beating and torturing him while cursing about black people, and cursing about Obama. Then when it's shown on the 6:00 news, the police chief of some other talking head comes out and says, "We're not clear on whether or not this was a hate crime". You can be sure that Black Lives Matter would be out on the streets chanting, "Hey Hey Ho Ho" followed by something that ends with the letter "O" in order to make it rhyme. Even more likely that they'd light some fires, throw some rocks and bottles and overturn some cars in the name of free speech.

Well, half of the people charged (including the only one over the age of 18) definitely can't use "toxic masculinity" as an excuse (as broad, nebulous and essentially meaningless a casual ad-hom as it is, it can only really be thrown at males).

People do all sorts of things in live streams, like suicide, there was even a woman that recently died where the family complained no one called in the emergency despite them viewing her demise.

Glad they videoed this, better evidence of what they chose to do to the victim.

i dont see kidnapping going away on this one. The fact the victim was mentally disabled, adds to the mix as well.

Not sure what the police said. Maybe what they said is being purposefully misreported.
Perhaps American news-reporters have this idealistic vision of USA society that interferes with their ability to report things in blatantly negative raw fashion? Remember, the"USA national anthem says "....and crowned thy good, with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea" So maybe the news media is advised to promote that political patriotic ideal and avoid conveying an American society irrevocably divided along racial lines. The problem is that such a policy, if indeed that is what it is, demands a very difficult suspension of disbelief from observers and invariably tends to come across as an insult to viewer intelligence. Or perhaps the reporters in this instance have a political agenda in reporting things in a way that will foment social unrest in order to get Trump to take drastic measures? Humans are like that sometimes. Full of all kinds of nasty surprises.

I don't think you understand what a red herring is. Someone made a comment about crimes being committed on live streams, I pointed out other acts not to divert attention, but to point to a new medium that showcases extreme acts in our society, like live streaming your own suicide. Perhaps you should read up logical fallacies before claiming other people are using them.

My reading comprehension is just fine, thank you.

If a black person is shot by a white police officer, there are riots by black people. It's presumed by them to be an injustice, even before they know any of the other facts. When a white person is shot by a police officer (no matter the cop's color), we don't see riots.

It also has nothing to do with "lack of punishment" when the riots happen after the shooting (or the video of a shooting), rather than after a verdict.
