Featured Love is fulfillment of the law?

    I apologize for my misunderstanding.

In Matthew 22:36-40, Jesus summarized the Mosaic Law as being about how to love God and how to love our neighbor, so it is the law of love. While I agree that there are more ways to do what is loving, righteous, and good, or to avoid sin than what the Law specifically prescribes or prohibits, the Law is spiritual (Romans 7:14), so it has always been intended to teach us how to live by deeper spiritual principles of which the listed laws as just examples, and those principles are the eternal attributes of God: holiness, righteousness, goodness (Romans 7:12), justice, mercy, faithfulness (Matthew 23:23), love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control (Exodus 34:6-7, Galatians 5:22-23). It is the law of sin that magnifies sin and causes us not to do the good that we want to do, not the Mosaic Law, which instructs us how to do what is good and to refrain from sin.

To fulfill the Law means to cause God's will as made known in the Law to be obeyed as it should be. After Jesus said in Matthew 5:17 that he came to fulfill the Law, he then proceeded to fulfill it six times throughout the rest of the chapter by teaching how to correctly and understand and obey it. According to Galatians 5:14, loving your neighbor fulfills the entire Law, so everyone who has ever done that has fulfilled the entire law, which means that it does not refer to something unique that Jesus did. Furthermore, but Bible does not say anywhere that it is impossible to fulfill the Law, but just the opposite. In Deuteronomy 30:11-14, it says that what God commanded was not too difficult for us, but that His Word is near us, in our hearts and in our mouths so that we can do it, and Romans 10:5-10 quotes this passage in regard to what our faith says.

You were making the point that Jesus was teaching a higher law and I was making the point that he was simply teaching how the Law has always been meant to be understood and obeyed.

The Mosaic Law instructs us how to act in accordance with God's righteousness, so it is the law of righteousness. God's righteousness is eternal and unchanging (Psalms 119:142), so God's instructions for how to reflect His righteousness are likewise eternal and unchanging (Psalms 119:160). This means that the way do what is righteous existed before God made any covenants with man and is therefore dependant on God righteousness rather than on any particular covenant, so there is a distinction between a set of instructions for how to act in accordance with God's righteousness and a covenant agreement to live by those instructions. A covenant can come and go, but the way to do what is righteous is eternal, so anyone regardless of what covenant they are under who wants to look up how to practice righteous can do so by reading the Mosaic Law. While we are not under the Mosaic Covenant, as part of the New Covenant we are nevertheless still told to practice righteousness (1 John 3:10). We are also told that all OT Scriptures are God-breathed and profitable for training in righteousness and equipping us to do every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). In Romans 2:13, it says that it is not hearers of the Law who will be justified, but the doers, and in Romans 2:26, the way to recognize that a Gentile has a circumcised heart is by observing their obedience to the Law, which is the same way that it is for a Jew (Deuteronomy 30:6).

Most certainly. One that is named frequently in Jesus case was a feeling of "compassion." God has enormous compassion for all those who in one way or another are "getting a fair deal" in this life - the poor, those suffering from discrimination or exclusion, the hungry, the powerless (children, elderly, widows and widowers, the diseased, the despised, the refugee and the homeless, the insecure, those without formal legal rights, and those whose basic rights are not respected, and so on. These are the ones that he was particularly interested in sharing the good news with.

But we also read that He "delights" in his people. When you delight in someone, your behaviour towards them is also one of active love, generosity, a wish to support towards growth and maturity.

Thanks for your comments Razzelflabben! God bless.

If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

True freedom cannot be had in isolation from others. Freedom is a relational thing. Freedom to become all you were meant to be as "an image of God" can only be achieved when you respect the same freedom in others, and when you have the right relationship with the Father, through Jesus his Son. And agape love is the only mechanism/medium/mode/method to do that. Freedom to love, only comes through allowing love, God's love, to take over your life.

(Back to the 2 core commandments - love God, and love your neighbour - the essence of fulfilling the law.)

there have been great idolaters/heretics who also loved their brothers and neighbors - so given the fact that they have committed great spiritual unrighteousness/lawlessness, wasn't their love false/hypocritical?! - after all, they have been the people that brought all stumbling blocks, twists, corruptions and temptations to the world (through their spiritual unrighteousness/lawlessness/wickedness)

Romans 12:9 (NASB) "Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.",

2 Corinthians 6:1-18 (NIV) "As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also. Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” And, “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”"

there is no [harm against/to the detriment of humans/souls] in or coming from the true God or His Kingdom, there has never been, nor will ever there be, but there has been and will be destruction of the satanic kingdom, IOW, all the manifestation(s) of the "darkness" will be closed and locked in a special place till the end of the eternity

Ephesians 6:12 (AKJV) "we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

neither was there ever a time in which the true God caused evil/harm to any human/soul, nor will ever there be such a case, but there has always been "darkness" (which is the negative side of the divine), a negative/wicked god, that is a cause/causer of evil/harm by its/his nature

The Rabbis and Torah scholars teach us, and Jesus confirms, that there are two verses upon which all of Torah is based:
    1. Love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, all thy mind, and all thy strength
    2. Love your neighbor as yourself
Every commandment fits into one of those two categories.

The only question you need to ask is, Which commandments are for me? For Jews there is the 613 of the Mosaic covenant. For Gentiles, there are the obvious universal laws given to Adam and Noah, don't kill, don't steal, etc; these laws are discussed in the NT.

    John 14:15
"If you love me, keep my commands.

    John 15:17
This is my command: Love each other.

    Matthew 22
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus replied: “?‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The whole of the Law and the Prophets is summed up in these two Commandments."

    Romans 13:10
Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

    John 13:35
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

    John 14
21Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
23Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

    1 John 4:8
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

Dear mmbatlestar. Yes, love is the fulfilment of law, God is Love and God wants loving sons and daughters. In Matthew 22: Jesus tells us: The first and great Commandment is: Love God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. The second is like it: love thy neighbour as thyself. In verse 40 we are told: on these Commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. God is Love, and love is the greatest. The Bible tells us: Give up all selfish and unloving thoughts and words, remember always that God is Love and God wants us to love and care always.
Jesus died out of Love for all of us, and Love is very catching. Matthew 7: 7-10; tells us: Ask and you shall receive. We keep asking God for Love and Compassion, for joy and always kind words. Satan and his followers will flee from ALL LOVE. Why not try is? Love will always be around us, we just ask and thank God. I say this with love, mmbattlestar. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

Yes. (well, not everyone does, but those born again and set apart in Jesus by the Father's will can and do)

The disciples of Jesus were shocked at some of His difficult words -
they were 'flabbergasted' and dismayed at times,
even asking "How then can WE be saved !?" ....
Jesus said simply , you can't...
if you trust yourself. But if you trust your heavenly Father (when YHWH is Father) to accomplish everything concerning your salvation in this life and in the life to come,
    then it is ALREADY DONE.

There is many other words Jesus says TO DO ALSO, too many for this forum in fact....
and it is written , not just "BE DOERS of THE WORD, and not hearers only"
but also "The gentiles who do not have TORAH yet who DO WHAT TORAH SAYS,
    THEY are justified;
while those who do have TORAH, yet DO NOT DO WHAT TORAH SAYS,
    THEY are NOT justified.... "

Again, there are many words, all true, in SCRIPTURE .... not one of them is false.

(This is important to remember, because if anyone "fits the description" of a man who is condemned, the description given IN SCRIPTURE,
then the man is condemned. No matter what other SCRIPTURE says ---

i.e. no one can truthfully CLAIM to be saved, if Scripture, anywhere, says they are not saved. Scripture NEVER contradicts itself. (many multitudes of people on earth have always and still today CLAIM to be saved, while Scripture clearly condemns them.... they might even have 50 PROMISES from Scripture they CLAIM, yet they fail because it is just for show, and they refuse to repent , and they refuse to obey Jesus. )

There are those that have imitated real Love but there are two key differences 1. real Love comes from the sincerity of the heart iow's much more than just a random act of kindness. In fact, I Cor. 13 talks about Love being kind but that kindness is a useful kindness, thus much more than just a smile or helping hand. 2. Love transforms people. IOW's there is a purpose it isn't just some random act.

    QUOTE="mmbattlestar, post: 71826313, member: 383061"]In Romans 13:10 Paul says:

"Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law."

If love is fulfillment of law then why did Jesus tell us to keep the law in John 14:15?

"If you love me, keep my commands."

    and again in Matthew 5:17-19:

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

Also, if Jesus fulfilled the law why do we need love to fulfill the law and why would Jesus say "keep the law"? If we are no longer under the law like Paul says in Romans 6:14? I'm confused

As you have posted, God's Word, see that actually it is simple.

The enemies of God, the haters of mankind, the enemies of God's people,
as in false teachers and false prophets and evil leaders,
have obscured even the meaning of faith and of love - people at many places on earth no longer know (if they ever knew) what faith and love and salvation is,
and there's no one to teach them or to train them in RIGHTEOUSNESS as written in SCRIPTURE.

Basically, love is obedience. (NOT a feeling, NOT an emotion).
Love means doing what is right. (according to God, not man).

Think a moment, who knows best ? Who knows what any person needs ? God.
So it is best to DO what God Says, since HE KNOWS BEST.

As written in His Word: BE DOERS of the WORD, and not just hearers; it is those who DO HIS WORD who are justified, and not those who are only HEARERS. (ROMANS)

I have to giving myself over to Godly, and not worldly, form of love...

The Jews' heaven and land passed away in AD70 with the destruction of their City, Temple and Sanctuary.
During the lifetime of Jesus, the holy temple in Jerusalem was the center of Jewish religious life.
The temple was the place where animal sacrifices were carried out and worship according to the Law of Moses was followed faithfully

You would think they would be happy to not have to perform the Levitical Mosaic Law, including the ordinances of the Temple and Sanctuary [at least not in this lifetime].

[Tho both we and they should keep the 10 Commandments I would think]

    Matthew 21:43
Therefore I am saying to ye, that shall be being taken-away from ye, the Kingdom of God, and it shall be being given to a Nation doing the Fruits of it.
    John 11:48
If-ever we should be letting Him thus, all shall be believing into Him and shall be coming the Romans and they shall be taking away of Us and the Place/topon <5117> and the Nation.
    Hebrews 8:13

The day on which Titus encompassed Jerusalem, was the feast of the Passover........

The Temple now presented little more than a heap of ruins.....

In executing the command of Titus, relative to the demolition of Jerusalem, the Roman soldiers not only threw down the buildings, but even dug up their foundations, and so completely levelled the whole circuit of the city, that a stranger would scarcely have known that it had ever been inhabited by human beings..............

And in fire She shall be being burned, that strong Lord, the God, the one judging Her

No I never would have expected they would be happy to not have to perform the various ceremonies, as there was once great purpose and joy and sanctification and testimony in doing what YHWH says to do, TORAH,
but then instead (in direct contrast)
it is devastating to find out there are many religious people (billions) who perform abominable defiled and forbidden (by Scripture) ceremonies every morning/ every day/ around the world
sinning against YHWH but doing it anyway because they are told they must and they will fight to the death anyone who tries to stop them !!!!! (they have executed millions over the centuries) ....

Love is fulfillment of the law?
This is what the LORD and Jesus says about that to Israel:

    Ezekiel 20:
1 Now in the seventh year, in the fifth month, on the tenth of the month, certain of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the LORD, and sat before me. 2 And the word of the LORD came to me saying, 3 “Son of adam! speak to the elders of Israel and say to them,........................

    25 “I also gave them statutes that were not good and ordinances by which they could not live;
26 and I pronounced them unclean because of their gifts, in that they caused all their firstborn to pass through the fire so that I might make them desolate, in order that they might know that I am the LORD.”’
27 “Therefore, son of adam, speak! to the house of Israel and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed Me by acting treacherously against Me.
