  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Despite lying well outside the target demographic for this product and most every other, I recently tried a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte for the first time. Disgusting. But enough science talk.

I recall years ago Dembski's book Intelligent Design was sometimes a topic in this forum. I'm wondering if anyone here knows the name of the Shakespeare poem that's in one of the later chapters. I'm drawing a blank. The copy I read was from the public library, and our libraries are still closed due to the Chinese cooties. If anyone can answer they will be handsomely rewarded with either an all expense paid Hawaiin vacation, or a Winner rating, at the sole discretion of the OP.

Dembski seems to be quoted here (but it's not clear what the source is):

But consider the sequence, “When my love swears that she is made of truth, I do believe her though I know she lies.” That sequence, spelled out in Scrabble letters, would not likely be an accident.16 It is both complex and specified.

If that's the one you want, the full poem is here: Sonnet 138

All I can find are articles where Dembski mentions or refers to Shakespearean works. Alas, I have failed you.
Alas and alack, that's all I get too.
I have access to the audiobook. If no one answers I'll get it for you. :)

Thank you. Looks like I need that.

Thanks. It was a sonnet, but that's not it. Subject was sorta existence in general I think.
I just got a copy of Apollonius of Rhodes ~ Jason and the Argonauts

I think that’s Homerish .... am I close?
Heh heh, no, but that was one of my favorite movies as a kid. :)

No problem. Do you remember where it is in the book? Related topics? I'll grab it tomorrow. :)

All I remember is that it's toward the end, maybe within the last 1/3 of the book. The poem had the word "world" in it. Sorry, wish I had more to go on.

That's fine Chesterton. I'll find it and give you the details for future reference. :)

I don't have the Dembski book you refer to, but since it is probably one of the sonnets could it be this? (Unfortunately Shakespeare seems to mention the world in about half of the sonnets!)

Devouring Time blunt thou the lion's paws,
And make the earth devour her own sweet brood,
Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tiger's jaws,
And burn the long-lived phoenix, in her blood,
Make glad and sorry seasons as thou fleet'st,
And do whate'er thou wilt swift-footed Time
To the wide world and all her fading sweets:
But I forbid thee one most heinous crime,
O carve not with thy hours my love's fair brow,
Nor draw no lines there with thine antique pen,
Him in thy course untainted do allow,
For beauty's pattern to succeeding men.
Yet do thy worst old Time: despite thy wrong,
My love shall in my verse ever live young.

I've looked through the last three chapters. I'll check the middle and front next. :)

In Chapter 8, page 235 there's a piece by Cowper:

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the Storm.

Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill,
He treasures up His bright designs
And works with His sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings on your head.

His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hours;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan His work in vain;
God is His own Interpreter
And He will make it plain.

—William Cowper, 1772

I've looked at the other sections. The Cowper piece is the lone one in the book. There are two references to Shakespeare. But his work isn't included. The poem was found in the section you indicated. :)
