Lockdowns had little or no impact on COVID-19 deaths, new study shows

If only Americans would have followed Sweden's populace and done exactly what was asked of them. Sweden had draconian Covid policies, didn't they?

Can you explain why then Sweden's cases are reaching record numbers? BTW, Sweden is considering lifting all restrictions next week.

I have a science and engineering background that is quite diverse; and in all facets of my studies, the same mathematical principles apply.
The math may not change, but the application certainly does. Being able to do equations is meaningless if you don't have a solid understanding of the numbers that you're working with. There's actually a pretty good example of this in one of the studies referenced in the OP article.

I went looking through it to see if there was any discussion of the Australia and New Zealand lockdowns. No mention of Australia, but there was one article that they used that discussed New Zealand, written by an economist. The thing is, that article took numbers from the US and used the fact that there was little difference between counties that instituted lockdowns and those that did not to conclude that the lockdowns in NZ prevented few, if any, deaths (and thus damaged the economy unnecessarily). Statistically, that seems like a reasonable conclusion on the surface, but it ignores the differences in actual behavior between the countries as well as the objective outcome - NZ had a near-zero infection rate despite the well-documented ease of transmission of COVID.

Now, you could argue that tightly closing the borders and instituting a strict quarantine for anyone entering the country (relatively easy for a small island nation like NZ) would obviate the need for an internal lockdown, and that this was more likely the reason for NZ's low infection rate, but the author does not even mention it, nor does he offer any explanation for (or even discuss) the infection rate there. To me, this represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the background concepts. He clearly knows statistics, but his lack of knowledge in other realms leads to an incomplete and misleading conclusion.

You tell me.
I couldn't say for sure. Perhaps they are not counting every death with Covid in with deaths from Covid as the US does. Perhaps they didn't spend as much energy trying to force healthy citizens with zero comorbidities to take unnecessary measures while focusing resources on protecting those at greater risk. Perhaps they are just a healthier population in general

Healthier? Perhaps. But also the fact that there are only 10 million of them compared to US around 350 million, and Sweden's lower population density. I bet it is all those factors and others as well.

Sweden had a very similar death rate to the US until spring of 2021.

It severely diverged in August of 2021, which happens to be when Sweden passed us in vaccination rate. Their booster rate is also 50% higher than ours, which is likely further fueling the divide.

It was already demonstrated on page 1 that Danish covid cases are now soaring. Maybe you missed that.
Denmark also hasn't had anything resembling a "lockdown" for quite a while now. Businesses were still open, and there weren't any restrictions on travel or leaving the house. People just had to wear a mask and show proof of vaccination to go to a nightclub or eat indoors at a restaurant.

Denmark ends almost all COVID restrictions

So having to show a passport to eat a hamburger, isn't a lockdown? Illegals don't show a passport to cross our southern border; yet Biden will insist that our borders are secure enough.

Double standard much?

The illegals at the border are not responsible for America's failed Covid response. The republicans are.

Mexico is a hotbed for Covid; and they're exporting it to the U.S., via our porous Southern border, thanks to Biden. In contrast, legitimate truckers from Canada, who bring us goods that we would actually find useful, are protesting the hoops that they have to jump through at our Northern border.

Go figure.

No, having to show a pass isn't a lockdown. You just show a pass and you are done.

Passes in Denmark have nothing to do with passports in mexico.

You mean the same Biden who is deporting people citing covid procedures as a reason? The same border that you didn't seem to care about when Trump was president?

That's right. Denmark has their boundaries locked. If you don't show your passport; you're not getting passed.

Both nation's have their borders locked. Denmark's are considerably easier to secure and they haven't spent decades destabilizing nations to their south causing in influx of illegals.

The same border that you didn't seem to care about when Trump was president?

How did you come up with that? Never mind. If you're relying on your imagination; it's deceiving you.

Can we get back on topic now?
