    No. Too little to late.

His response was initially to deny followed very rapidly by trying to pass the blame.

I don't think that he ever tells the truth unless he can spin it to make himself look good.

Just when leadership is needed we have Trump.

He should promote small business startups with tax-free options. The smaller the business, the less shooting rampages and disease resistant economy. Oh, and we should nationalize healthcare for that reason. We should revive the economy with support for small businesses.

No president can be expected to be an expert in epidemiology (unless that happened to be their career before politics). The job of the president right now is to say "Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce the director of the CDC, who will explain the best science about the situation. We will be following the CDC's recommendations," and then turn over the microphone. President Trump hasn't been doing a great job of that so far, but there's always time to have a change of heart.

No, though it should also be said that virtually every government in the West has completely botched this situation.

He should not have disbanded the global health security unit back in 2018, and shouldn't have been chasing anyone who knew anything about pandemics out of his administration.

Currently, he shouldn't be holding the states hostage. Governor Cuomo of New York made a statement today that there's only so much that the states can do without the backing of the government--he wants military to come in to transform state university dorms into makeshift hospitals, because the state doesn't have the resources.

I can't really comment, because I don't listen to anything he says in the first place.

Of course, this assumes that Trump's appointed CDC chair is actually competent and not anti-science, which assumes a lot.

While I've disliked some of Trump's appointments, Robert Redfield's resume looks sound: CDC Director If Dr. Redfield is unqualified for some reason I'm not seeing, then perhaps deputy director Dr. Anne Schuchat. What I have in mind is some highly-qualified, high-ranking career scientist with a good scientific knowledge of epidemics -- whoever that turns out to be.

Since Trump's appointments in general are pretty wacky to say the least, I couldn't help but be suspicious, but I suppose it's possible for him to accidentally choose someone who is qualified. :)

He denied it too long. At this point he's taking it seriously. It's hard to assess the steps. I'm not convinced there's a real plan, but I don't think the US is unique in that. I'm concerned that no one is thinking beyond this week. Can we really shut down the country for a year?

    I see several issues now:
    * In some cases Trump's normal problems are showing. The way in which flights from outside the US were handled surely caused more virus transmission, not less. That was typical Trump: announce a new policy in Twitter without giving people a chance to think about how to implement it.
    * His rhetoric is tending to deny or minimize the Federal role, though in fact the CDC is doing their best.
    * We're feeling the impact of his failure to support proactive work. Killing the pandemic team is the most egregious example. But in my opinion Obama didn't make it enough of a priority either.
    * I think there's too much focus on banning plane flights. The US isn't alone in that, so it's hard to criticize Trump, but I think experts are saying it's too late.

I think we have a potential disaster. The one thing that may save us is that exponential growth hasn't actually persisted in any country for longer than a few weeks. I don't know why not.
