We have setbacks in life in the things we undertake. These setbacks can be direct, in the form of disappointment that an undertaking hasn’t worked out as planned. Or, it can be indirect, in the form of a loved one or someone you depended on who is no longer around, with your resulting depression causing you to lose interest and follow through on what you started, using your remaining resources at hand and making efforts to seek alternative paths in righteous pursuits.

Or we might conclude we’re knocking our heads against a wall in a specific undertaking when with a little more understanding, what we’re knocking our heads against is not a wall, but a door with a doorknob we can turn, if our pursuit is one that has all the elements of righteousness, including the things that God stands for, and worshipping Him instead of money.

There are a number of people and things on earth that represent opportunities but the potential for setbacks and disappointments are in direct proportion to the number of those people and things. The best we can do is to minimize those setbacks and disappointments to the best of our reasoning and abilities without turning away from God, since, as we are warned in Verses such as 2 Chronicles 15: 2..7 that if we forsake God he will forsake us.

There are setbacks and disappointments that we will invariably be unable to avoid since they’re due to things beyond our control and are unexpected. The Bible tells us that in any pursuit which is a righteous one, we should not give up. If it is a righteous pursuit, it is one that God intended us to undertake, using how He wonderfully made us as it says in Psalms 139:14. We were all made in accordance with God’s Purpose He laid out for us, as stated in Jeremiah 29:11, and when we follow through in accordance with our calling to whatever purpose God has for us, the results turn out for good for us as stated in Romans 8:28.

We do not give up on God, in fulfilling what we believe to be God’s Purpose. Surely He will not give up on us, as it states in Deuteronomy 31:6 There is nothing to be afraid of or be dismayed about if we do not turn away from God, as implied in Isaiah 41:10.

As to the act of not giving up, Jesus in Luke 18:1-8 tells, in the Parable of the Persistent Widow, of a widow who repeatedly seeks justice from a judge who “neither feared God nor respected man.” Eventually, the judge grants her justice, just so he can get her out of his sight. The point is, if the widow can achieve her goal of seeking justice from a judge whose attributes are entirely contrary to hers, and of whom there is otherwise a strong probability that with his neglect of man and God he would not comply with any act that is undertaken out of righteousness, is that any more difficult than to undertake something in the midst of People who have an interest in God or man, or both?

To look at it from another angle, Deuteronomy 31:6 implies that we not even think of the obstacles we may run up against...if our undertaking is a righteous one and if we justify God’s being with us by not turning away from or forsaking Him, we can accomplish our undertaking.

For a quick analogy, if we’re driving to a destination and we see a bump in the road which is small enough for us to drive over, would we not continue going instead of turning around and going back? We encounter many bumps in our lives. We encounter barriers to what we pursue, that take a little more effort than just driving over bumps. If we mean to drive onto a specific property and we encounter a gate, and our purpose for being on that property is a good one, do we not get out of our car and open the gate, then go back to our car and drive in? Of if the gate is locked, do we not go about finding the key? Or if we get sidetracked by a more impending matter at the moment, do we not leave the property to take care of that matter and do we not return to go onto the property when the matter is resolved? Is it difficult to apply the same principles to the actual things in our lives?

To all those who entertain giving up on an otherwise good pursuit, there is another way, which is the way to God. Onward Christian soldiers!
