French women are starting to picture their next president as a divorced mother of three.

The anti-euro, anti-immigrant candidate Marine Le Pen has been playing up her gender as she seeks to convert a likely first-round victory into an overall majority in the run-off on May 7 -- and it’s paying off. The 48-year-old National Front leader has already rallied some 2 million additional female voters to her cause since her last run for president in 2012 and she’s betting more will follow.

“Women are the key,” said Nonna Meyer, a researcher at the Sciences Po institute in Paris who has studied the National Front for 25 years. “These women often abstain and now they are backing Le Pen to protect their jobs and their security.”

What can you say, women don't want to be raped by refugees, and have to wear a hijab or have FGM, they also don't want to see their cities burned to the ground over offensive cartoons. These women are patriots.

Read an interesting article in Spiegel about the current chaos and uncertainty in France. It seems to me that there is almost universal dissatistfaction with Frances political class and as a result Melanchon on the left and Le Pen on the right are regarded as credible candidates. Ghe nightmare scenario here for France and for Europe would be that the 2 extremist candidates make it to the final round. If it is a choice between left and right Le Pen would win. This could then lead to the collapse of the EU and the end of the current European order

And a good number of people on this site would cheer, as Europe descends into economic chaos. Scaremongering I think not, the collapse of the euro, protectionism, in terms of security it would be a story of unintended consequences as well.

The only beneficiaries would be Russia, and ISIS.

I also find it funny the number of people on the right declaring the Nazis to be lefty socialists whilst supporting Le Pen, who's nationalism and economic policies are very similar to that Charlie Chaplin character.

Yes Russia seem quite positive at the idea of the EU breaking up into weaker nation states. It believes it can then sweep in to reestablish its Eastern hegemony.

I suppose a Le Pen or Melanchon victory would be good for the Uk doing BREXIT as separate agreements with France would then be possible.

I understand French dissatisfaction with their political elite but as with the revolution replacing Bourbons with Napoleon just led to major costs for France and chaos across Europe and a century of political instability after that.

Except that Le Pen really does not like the UK, betting on getting a good deal with A more protectionist inward looking France is not one I'd take.

But not sure Melenchon on the left would be any better as he also is anti EU. Also he seems to be surging in the polls.

One of my biggest questions is whether France is going to rally behind a centrist candidate like Macron or just seek to overthrow the establishment with Le Pen or Melenchon.

Oh I agree melenchon would be just as disasterous.

Not sure it is a question of liking. If France leaves the EU it would be vastly more unpopular with the European establishment than even the UK is right now. Frances only option would be closer ties with the UK.

If Macron wins the French economy would also benefit from normalised UK trade and political arrangements. He will have enough to deal with inside the country rather than having external drags on France also

Macron is hated in the countryside, and very mocked, he is currently losing popularity. Nobody knows what he really thinks, so I don't know if he will make it or not. It is so weird, everything is possible for tomorrow, nobody knows who will win. Fillon is far from being dead too, he actually has pretty good chances to make it too - as he is my personal favorite, I hope so. And when it comes to economic programs, Le Pen and Mélenchon agree on many many points : exactly the kind of program that I truly dislike, as it nationalizes everything and gives to the State even more control - when our economy is already suffering from it and our State very powerful.
Anyway, in two weeks France could be ruled by 4 different candidates who are almost all equally supported. Still, Le Pen is seen as the great favorite and it is one of the greatest changes of the French political horizon. The attack on the policeman would certainly help her too, perhaps Fillon too, but it is catastrophic for Macron.
I will vote tomorrow, come home and have no idea of what will happen. It is quite awkward, let's say I will remember my very first election.

The only thing I like about Macron is his pro European stance. His adultery with a married woman 24 years older than him, his Leftist background and his atheism speak of a man of poor judgment and no Christian moral compass. Surely France needs a wise person to lead it out of its current foolishness and chaos not someone who subscribes to the same godless foolishness that got France into this mess. Despite his socialism the man is clearly from a very privileged establishment background (successful rich parents, elite schools, investment banking job). Good grief if he is the best alternative to Le Pen France is doomed.

Fillon is my favourite candidate. A Christian father of 5, he opposed gay marriage and is against abortion also, the man is an Anglophile and his political and economic instincts are quite sound. He has been tainted by this corruption scandal but it does not look too serious and in the circumstances he can be forgiven just about anything right now. He has experience at the top and is the only one with a hint of wisdom.

Of course a country does not always vote for the candidate that they actually need.

So looks like Macron (En Marche)(23%) versus Le Pen (FN)(23%) for the Final vote from the Exit polls. Both candidates are not in establishment parties. Macron is expected to win the run off. Socialist party (7%) was destroyed by Commies on Left and Macron Centre Left. Centre Right (Fillon - Republicans) at 19% with Commies also on 19%.

France elections: Macron-Le Pen though to run-off, projections say - BBC News

Indeed Fillon has just conceded and backed Macron.
" Despite all my efforts, my determination, I have not succeeded in convincing my fellow countrymen and women. The obstacles in my path were too numerous and too cruel. This defeat is mine, I accept the responsibility, it is mine and mine alone to bear.

We have to choose what is best for our country. Abstention is not in my genes, above all when an extremist party is close to power. The Front National is well known for its violence and its intolerance, and its programme would lead our country to bankruptcy and Europe into chaos.

Extremism can can only bring unhappiness and division to France. There is no other choice than to vote against the far right. I will vote for Emmanuel Macron. I consider it my duty to tell you this frankly. It is up to you to reflect on what is best for your country, and for your children."
