First off, any suggestions on a laptop where the total price (including any tax or shipping) would be under $2000? Student oriented, but I'll be gaming some ;)

Secondly, is there a big difference between 4200rpm and 7200rpm in a laptop? Is it worth another $140 for 7200rpm?

Thirdly, will a 2mb go5200 set me back, or should I really go for the 128mb radeon 9600. :)

I would recommend looking at Toshiba or Dell laptops. You can pick up a nice P4-3GHz or so in your price range.

There is a big difference between a 4200 and 7200 RPM drive. Much faster access times and the like.

The FX5200 nVIDIA (that is what you're talking about, right?) is nothing but a piece of junk, equivalent to a Radeon 9000 or so. It's gutless and one of nVIDIA's first attempts at utilizing the 200 engineers they scammed from the 3dfx merger. The 9600 will be twice the card, esp for games. :)

That was my gut feeling, especially the 5200 (yeah, that's the card, only they call it go, I think). I saw online it was compare to a 9000, and I was wondering... yeah. I don't know why Dell doesn't give an option of a 64mb 9600 or something, but oh well.

Dell and Toshiba are what I'm currently looking at... though I'm going for the centrino. Right now, I'm leaning towards an inspiron 8600, which I can configure to my liking (128mb 9600 and the 7200rpm hdd) for about $1625... which is rather nice.

Honestly, one of the most important things to consider on a laptop is its warranty. If you can get an extended warranty, even better. Dell or Toshiba are possibly your best choice for a laptop. Though I'm also partial to some of the Sonys. Definitely go for the 7200rpm hard drive and the ATI video card if you can fit it in your budget. Make sure to check out www.edealinfo.com to be able to catch some good deals on laptops amongst other stuff. It "usually" changes daily.

God bless!
