I was thinking of this because of what is written at the beginning of Romans 2. Since God is using kindness to get people to repent, and turn towards him, would this fall under the category of "imitating God?" what do you think?

Yes....but I don't think kindness equates to "go ahead....treat others--and yourself--however you like... I'm good with it". I think it's more about seeing each person's individual dignity and wanting the best for them. Never controlling them....but encouraging them.

The best human example of this I've seen is Father Greg Boyle. He has a ministry helping gang members turn their lives around.

False premise. God is not using kindness to get man to repent
According to the passage that Michael quoted in the OP--the Bible seems to say otherwise:

“So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?” (Romans 2:3-4)
