Juneteenth is 'perfect answer' to critical race theory: Heritage Foundation president | Fox News

"Juneteenth is a perfect answer to those who are promoting critical race theory," Kay C. James, president of the Heritage Foundation, said in an interview with Fox News. "Juneteenth says, no, we do not need to destroy the very structures of this nation, the things that make us great. That while there were issues or problems in our history, look at how we overcame and are overcoming them."

I agree. It's fantastic! Our white ancestors almost did the right thing (you can see the paternalism in the last couple lines). "The Freedmen are advised..." Ha! That "idleness" is a favorite white complaint. Imagine telling freed slaves not to be idle. The nerve.

The people are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property, between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them, becomes that between employer and hired labor. The Freedmen are advised to remain at their present homes, and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts; and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.

Juneteenth and Barbecue

Just make sure to have plenty of red. You know? Well, if you ain't from Texas, I guess you don't.

Are we overcoming the problems?

Congress passed a law making Juneteenth a national holiday---but did they do anything to derail all the racist voter suppression laws or race-based gerrymandering by passing the For the People Act or the less comprehensive John Lewis Act? No.

Did they pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to make police more accountable? No.

They aren't "overcoming the problem." They brushed it under the rug with a bit of window dressing.

As Biden said at the summit regarding another subject, give him a bit of time.

Juneteenth was unanimously passed in the Senate. Extremist House Republicans continue to separate themselves out by opposing this and the medals for the heroes of January 6th. The Republican Senator from Texas was there at the podium with Biden. Texas has celebrated the holiday for over 40 years. This all is a bit more than window dressing.

Still, the beneficial optics of a unified Congress and a truly bipartisan Law (EDIT: yes, it’s “fluff”), being passed is a boon to all involved.
