In John 8:59 the jews pick up stones to stone Yeshua but he slips away. I thought only the Romans could authorize capital punishment. I have a few theories.

Hebraic name of Christ. When the Bible was written in Greek, it was written as "Iesous", and then in Latin as "Iesus", and finally in English as "Jesus".

Indeed, when Jesus/Yeshua was before Pilate, the Jews present stated that it was not right for them to legally kill anyone (John 18:31). As ever, it seems this was honored more in the breach than in the observance...

john 8:59 would be just after Christ's third Passover in John 8:4 but before his fourth Passover in John 11?

Maybe the Jews lost the authority in the last year of Jesus is ministry on Earth? Life%20of%20Jesus%20Showing%20Coverage%20by%20All.gif

Maybe the point was to try to get the Romans to hang him on a tree so that he would incur eternal curse. So as to quash the movement?

Stoning continued after the crucifixion. This seems more a political matter, the Temple wanting to distance itself from killing a Messiah. Jesus had already accused them of killing the prophets.

Stoning was an unlawful act by an angry mob, like a lynching. Different from officially sanctioned action.

The Romans permitted the Jews to kill other Jews who "defiled" Judaism, unless that person was a Roman citizen. (Remember how frightened both the Romans & many Jews became when, after beating Paul, they found out he was a Roman citizwn?) Stoning was a traditional Jewish killing method, so the Romans generally permitted it. However, crucifixion could only be done by the Romans, & only to a non-citizen. (Citizens were executed by decapitation, or being elected captain of the javelin-catching team. Often, the Jews simply stabbed a Jewish offender with a sword, which the Romans generally ignored. Remember, the Romans used double standards & overlooked Jews murdering Jews when it served their interest, but public crucifixions were THEIR baby.

So the Temple tried to prevent the stoning of Stephen?
