Jesus Walks on the Water
Reference:
Matthew 14:22-33
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Biblical Points:
~~~~~~~~~~
Night.
Far from land.
Storm threatening the boat.
(Note some of these Disciples are fishermen/weather watchers since kids, so for them to be worried and seeing this as different from normal weather is a point to be noted.)
Jesus walks out to them, Probably looking like the dreaded Spirit of Drowning - stories of which they'd grown up with - ready to take them to the depths.
Peter, once he gets over the shock, says Cool! I wanna go on this ride.
Unfortunately like a of people -me- who start off single mindedly on a Project only to lose focus, Pete fails the Faith test due to distraction by the Wind conditions, doubts he can make it, and *nearly* goes for a swim, because very happily for Pete, Jesus, knowing what would happen to a wet person in these conditions, *Immediatly* stopped Pete from dropping further into the water.
Jesus calls the failure to be Faith based, causing Doubt.
Note: Jesus did not prevent the failure, he DID lessen the impact of the failure.
Something to give THANKS for in our lives.
Scientific explanation:
Did Jesus walk on water? Or ice?
"The results suggest temperatures dropped to 25 degrees Fahrenheit (-4 degrees Celsius) during one of the two cold periods 2,500 to 1,500 years ago for up to two days, the same decades during which Jesus lived."
1. Interesting Science that I acknowledge, however, I would have thought that the storm, would have easily dispersed the conditions to freeze the ice, ie would not have given the conditions a stable platform of temperature, and chemical composition to form continuous ice. It may have created small islands of loose "Floaties" but no stable platform to walk on. I'm thinking of those Google "Funny people falling thru the ice on their pool and rivers" etc.
2. Science doesn't address this point: Since Peter went for a walk and fell in, I suspect that Peter would have been in a LOT of trouble health wise after climbing into the boat soaking wet, and in -4 Celsius temperatures, with a lengthy trip in an open boat, and harsh wind causing additional Wind Chill, and severe hypothermia so unless Peter v2 was drafted from the people lining the shores of Gallilee, then this did not happen.
This is a good example of Science only focusing on one part, not the whole story.
Side Discussion:
Matthew 17:20
And He said to them, “Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
It is also possible that although Miraculous ways can be found and used, Getting Off Our Butt and Working for God seems to be the normal and best way to move mountains.
However, IF God is using natural means to do things, like using a type of wind to part the Red Sea, then this is what God does. Same as my arguments that God use Evolution to create what He wants.
[I may post something on Magicians vs God - Round 1 the Plagues] because it demonstrates that Men can do a lot of what God does.
I don't believe this is heresy, as God created Adam to do Work on God's behalf - in Earth.
What we Cannot do is Work on God's behalf in Heaven.
As for Peters Water walking? Is that natural and can we use it in our daily lives as Jesus said? If so, then there should be some evidence of people TRULY believing in something and it happening.
Jericho's walls falling, and the Coral Castle (Mystery of the Coral Castle Explained | Live Science) come to mind with discussions as to whether Peter/ people had superpowers or not.
It is possible to levitate large items on standing waves. (I'm thinking of a vid of a car speaker levitating a nearly empty drink container) In the old days (1900's) there were stories of tribes using a focus bowl and many trumpets lifting building rocks 1 metres into the air.
Compare this to Jericho, where the Bible also confirms this method.
Me: It is possible that the shouts and trumpets could have created enough standing waves to float and separate the wall's stones?
