Dear Daily Message Readers,

READ: Hebrews 13:12-16

Hebrews 13:16 (NET) “Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, acknowledging his name.”

The writer of the Hebrews uses 12 chapters to show the supremacy of Christ over the religion of Judaism. The word “better” is used 14 times to express that Jesus is superior to the angels, Moses, and the priesthood. The writer’s purpose is to encourage Christians to grow and to warn some of the readers about the danger of lapsing back into Judaism.

From the famous chapter of faith in Hebrews 11 to the end of the book, the author speaks of three key elements: faith, hope, and love. By the work of faith, the ancients were commended and looked forward to the promise of the superior covenant with Jesus Christ (Hebrews 11). By the patience of hope, the ancients endured discipline from the Lord and learned His ways (Hebrews 12). Finally, by the labor of love, the writer urges service to others under the stability of Christ (Hebrews 13)

All these truths—from Christ’s superiority to the practical application of faith, hope, and love among the truly saved brethren—lead the believer to “continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God” (13:16). The original Greek screams that because Christ is living and active (cf. 13:8), our praise should be continual and without end. There is no sign that knowing what the writer has labored over for 13 chapters that anyone who knows Him should or would want to praise any other thing or person other than Jesus Christ.

Faith Lesson: Jesus Christ’s superiority over everything demands our endless praise.

In Christ,
Darin Smith
