The letters were written by Jeremiah specifically for the exiles and carried to the exiles by two men so I would say that is indication in itself. Additionally, in my KJV study bible the chapter itself has the title of "Jeremiah's Letter to the Exiles" i've also read through this book recently in a bible study group together and we've came to that conclusion.

But just because something is for a specific group of people doesn't mean the ideoligy doesn't apply to anyone else.

The epistles Paul wrote were for churches that existed during his time but they apply today for example.

I'm young, so I can't say I've ever established a fortune yet. Sure you could take the whole chapter and try to apply it but to me the scripture alone is applicable. Every chapter has a scripture or two in it you can quote and apply but the rest of the chapter in some cases you can't.

Personally I believe certian scriptures can stand alone and be applied to your life... in fact we tend to do that all the time with certian phrases we say in the church, but that's just me.

That's the thing, though. It really can't mean what it never meant. That verse can't be isolated to mean something it was never intended to convey.

The verse still means the same thing you're just applying it to yourself. I feel you're just being difficult though, if you don't want to use the verse don't use it. But god still thinks thoughts of peace and he still has an expected end so the verse is still applicable.

I'm not saying that there's no application here. I'm just saying that it's not a personal application.

If a scripture can do something for someone today it's applicable. If telling someone god knows the thoughts he thinks torwards them peace not evil to give them an expected end does something and it's true even today it applies. People are in captivity like they were in Babylon, people are in situations where there seems to be no way out and God is willing to offer peace and an expected end today for anyone willing to turn to him. Just because a letter was written for a specific group doesn't mean we can't apply it... that's basically what we do with the NT letters that were also written for a specific group, we apply it.

I am saying all that so..you ask HIM.. is that verse for me? He never to this day asked me what do I think YOU believe or some church or some preacher. Not.. what do you think they believe about what I said. He ask me what do I BELIEVE.

The application I get from this is no matter how dark life may seem, God will work things out for those who love Him. No matter where we are, we are not beyond His reach; He will gather His people to Himself in His time, and we will worship Him together in the sweet fellowship of love.

You may look at God's promises and see no application to your life in them, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to look at them in the same way. Don't force such faithless views onto others. I find encouragement in God's promises. Don't try to steal that hope away from me, nor anyone else.

Could you take any promise to any person in the Bible and apply it directly to yourself?

This verse has been given to me in the past as a word of comfort I suppose. I too have wondered about this and other verses and their applicability for individuals today? That kind of keeps me from claiming it. Obviously as has been pointed out it has a context, which can be found by reading the whole chapter. Of course some will claim it as a kind of word directly to them in their circumstances. I don't want to critcise that but it brings up the issue of what the Bible is and in what way we are to profit from reading it?
