James Mattis Denounces President Trump, Describes Him as a Threat to the Constitution

“I have watched this week’s unfolding events, angry and appalled,” Mattis writes. “The words ‘Equal Justice Under Law’ are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation.” He goes on, “We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution.”

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us,” Mattis writes. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.”

“When I joined the military, some 50 years ago,” he writes, “I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.”

Trump is the best supporter of the Constitution that we have had in a long time.

Only if "a long time" is within the last 16 minutes.

He even protects the littlest Americans
the ones in the womb.

But if they start looting, he'll start shooting.

[STAFF EDITED DELETED QUOTE]

It's going to be so much fun to see all Donald's (current) followers toss him under the bus the instant he leaves office, and a new GOP voice takes his place.

Nothing Mattis says matters. If you like Trump you like him and if you don't you don't. Mattis won't move the needle not even a smidgen. It's already baked into the cake. Everyone knows Mattis didn't like him so what? He's not bringing anything new to the table.

Yeah, he’s just a 50 something plus year decorated military vet. Who cares what he has to say?

Is the First Amendment no longer part of the Constitution?

I really don’t understand this kind of blind loyalty to a politician. Bernie Sanders is probably my favourite politician of my lifetime, yet if people who worked with him came out and revealed damaging stuff about him I’d factor that into my opinion.

Why would you just like someone no matter what you learn? That’s just weird. They’re not your kid or your pet or something, they’re a politician you don’t personally know.

If Mattis didn't like him, why did Donald ever have him as SECDEF?
