Pentagon Denies NYT Claim of Russian Bounty on US Soldiers in Afghanistan

The US Department of Defence (DoD) Has officially denied a New York Times (NYT) report that Russian intelligence offered bounty to the Taliban for killing US and coalition soldiers in Afghanistan.
Chief Pentagon Spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement Monday, "The Department of Defense continues to evaluate intelligence that Russian GRU operatives were engaged in malign activity against United States and coalition forces in Afghanistan. To date, DOD has no corroborating evidence to validate the recent allegations found in open-source reports. Regardless, we always take the safety and security of our forces in Afghanistan — and around the world — most seriously and therefore continuously adopt measures to prevent harm from potential threats."

Surprise, surprise, the lying press lies...

It always seemed like a strange way for the Russians to spend their money. Paying the Taliban to attack Americans in Afghanistan would be like paying a heterosexual adolescent boy to have sex with a beautiful woman. I'm sure they would take your money but why would you bother to offer it?

Aside from the fact that the Taliban was working on a peace agreement with the US, and that offering financial incentives to ramp up activity could negatively affect that process, sure.

Assume for a moment that the bounties are real: What would the DoD gain by confirming it?

Why do you want to assume it? I am more likely to assume that the NYT is again publishing something from an anonymous source that they have not bothered to substantiate because they want to assume it is true.

Well, for one, they've got a significant number of sources, including outside the US, who corroborate the story. It's not just "an" anonymous source.

Who are those sources? I am interested to know the names.

Why do you want to assume it?

What we "want" is irrelevant. If the bounties are real, why would the DoD admit it?

Of course you are; that's a given. I'm asking you to step out of your comfort zone momentarily and consider an alternative.

I entertained your assumption, but since the NYT is not the only source of information on the bounties, your version of events seems unlikely.

That says to me that, the DOD continues to evaluate intelligence and that so far they don't have any evidence of it.
I don't see where they are saying that it is definitively untrue.

I have doubts about but they have not said it was a lie.

But it really doesn't matter. This chapter in the campaign to get the president out of office by "whatever it takes" may persuade a few people who don't look too closely at the whole story.

And that's all that the President's detractors need.

Notice that the Trump-Putin bromance--also a hoax--is still being peddled by prominent politicians and reiterated by the same media you are referring to.

Uh, no it isn’t. Basing your notions on one thing isn’t helping your credibility much.

who don't look too closely at the whole story.

In fact, it’s exactly the opposite. I’m yet to encounter a single person who has done anything like what might be called a bit of research into any of these hoax claims, and yet, without any knowledge of the situation at all, they all claim that their random notions about it are absolute truth.
