May God bless your ministry to the Tli Cho First Nation, there are many problems in the north and I know you will help make a difference.

Would you be able to complete your education through correspondence if you stayed?

Masi Cho. You sound familiar with this group. Are you by chance from around that area or are you Dene yourself?

No idea.... The world revolves around this: $ which is something I have very little of.

Sorry, I live in southern Alberta and my roots are entirely based in northern europe.

I am a bit of a political junkie and am familiar with this group due to the land claim agreement they reached with the federal government a couple of years ago.

EVERY report I have heard from the north has been negative and most of these reports have not been from missionaries but from people who have lived up there because their job took them there (people in the energy industry, diamond industry and the RCMP).

Although I have not personally been that far north the people I know who have say pretty much exactly what you said early in this thread about the problems and conditions that exist.

I know it is a fairly big area between Great Slave Lake and Great Bear Lake that the Tli Cho occupy. Where will you be headed?

I also had a question you might be able to answer. I have heard that a hybrid religion in the area is a blend between Roman Catholicism and the Dene Tradition. Is that your experience or is it largely their traditional beliefs that they practice?

I was one of those last spring telling you to take a big supply of Muskol. I have not been to Northwest Territories but I do go to Canada a lot. I live just 10 miles from the border in North Dakota. We have a "few" mosquitoes but are short on streams so the blackflies are pretty rare.

I have had the experience of running with a canoe on my shoulders in a cloud of gnats and blackflies so I can appreciate what you say about them.

So many people live so protected from nature they really don't have much of a clue how to deal with it. I have met people who live in cities founded on swamps who have never seen bad mosquitoes. They just think you can swat them off. There is a reason the moose go out and submerg in the lakes. Just think, the male mosquitoes don't bite, so you are only being attacked by half of the population.

Cold can be a killer, especially cold and wet. Be careful. You probably won't adapt too well the first winter, but in the spring when you are running outside on a real nice day where the temp is about freezing and you realize you only have a shirt or a light jacket on, you will realize just how much you did adapt. A beard and mustache aren't all bad. Even though they get coated with ice rapidly from your breath, it is warmer underneath than without. Having your face pretty well locked in place by the ice in your beard and mustache is kind of a different experience. Of course if you do grow a beard, everyone will know what you had to eat that day.

Outreach to the first nations is a real specialty. A lot of times what you find is that the people who appear most receptive are mostly interested because they think you will help them financially in some way. I think some of them are coming up on their 100th baptism.

Only God can change what is happening around the world. In a place like the first nations, at least the effects of sin and the sin are more out in the open. I don't think they are any worse than other places, it is just that things are impossible to hide so why bother?

With the loss of so much of the need to be continually busy just to produce the basic necessities necessary for life. Many decline into slothful boredom with the only releases being sex, drugs, and alcohol. The drugs and alcohol are such a problem.

A lot of the Proverbs were written about just such a life.

I think the most problematic thing is that so many would already consider themselves Christian so they don't see much need to become Christian, yet at the same time, there is a real revival of their cultural traditions and religion. Any speaking against the "old ways" will be seen as very disrespectful by many. Many tie Christianity with the drugs and alcohol that came after contact with outsiders. So there are some powerful first nation leaders who see Christianity as part of the problem, not the solution.

Law and Gospel man, Law and Gospel. God's Word is powerful. Keep giving them the Law and the Gospel.

I will be in the Great Slave Region, specifically in the area around Yellowknife.

What you hear about the Roman Catholics is correct and I will be ministering to RC's as well (in hopes that they will convert away from Catholicism). [that was the scandalous edit from the first post; people get ticked off for this but oh well].

Haha, terrible creature... If I go back up in the summer I am buying a bug jacket.
Aye. I am a city slicker, its hard for me. When I got back into Montana I sat down in Front of Mountainview Baptist Church and the first thing I noticed was that there was not one mosquito or gnat flying around me. And then I rejoiced.

I doubt I will adapt well. I hate the cold.

haha, amen. The youth simply want rides, but the adults will milk you till your dry and not even offer a thanks in return. You can help them 100 times, help them with hard labor, etc. but the moment you reject them once you are despised by them. They do it to each other too.

    Exactly.

They are a very lazy people, half of them dont have jobs and the gov't supports them. When they do have money they gamble and blow it all. Kids really fend for themselves a good portion of the time and we always have people over for dinner.

These are some of things addressed in my previous post, you just went into detail.

    Thanks for your response.

Why because he is honest about what he is trying to do or is willing to do? Look on GT guys or in the veiled questions from various OBOB members in GT or OBOB about subjects like sola scriptura. Are these questions not based on trying to convert people to your beliefs? Are you not trying to get people to the fullness of the truth? Do you claim that you do not want us to be RCC? Don't lie folks, the shoe hurts when it is on the other foot.

Good on ya TLE. Preach the Gospel and if you have to use words.

In my humble opinion your wrong twice. 1. theologically but i don't want to go into that (this aint the proper place anyway.)

    2. It is my humble opinion that all churches should be working together in the missions to bring people to JESUS!! We should all be working to bring people to JESUS when we are "sheep stealing" we set a very bad example. A non-christian could easily ask Why should i become a Christian? They just fight among themselves.

I can understand answering questions truthfully but if someone identifies themselves as Catholic it seems to me you should simply ask if there is anything you can do for that person and not point out areas you disagree with Holy Mother Church!

i am praying for you!! and i am stilll excited that you are doing mission work (but i think i need to go along to help the Catholics grow in their faith!)

Mark is it true that you joined RCIA and came to OBOB to learn how to argue against Holy Mother Church? I always thought it was simply a part of your learning experience. I thought and hoped that your questions were made with an open mind a mind searching for truth.

No matter. I am praying for you and i will continue to pray for you!! (and i still love you my brother!! ~ no matter what we are brothers in JESUS!!

Not originally Lonnie, but as I sit here and think I cannot help but think that when one gains knowledge (about anything) and he disagrees with it, he grows in his ability to argue against it. While that is a good side effect I think to the learning of anything, it was not my intended purpose, that is correct. I rather enjoyed RCIA and hearing what the priest and class had to say. It challenged me. I wanted to go this semester from the beggining but my course work has proved very demanding and I have not the time.

Okay, it's settled. Lonnie will go with TLE as a missionary to the Catholics.
I'll babysit your boys, Lon. :)

But seriously, Envoy, since there are so many Catholics where you are going, has your church given any thought to working with a Catholic church on these mission trips?

I remember the story from Dr. James Kennedy: "I certainly don't make any such assumption, John. In fact, I have said from this pulpit, right here, "That there are a number of members of my church that I would not want to be handcuffed to when they die!" The ECT document says, "That all active Roman Catholics are brothers and sisters in Christ and therefore should not be evangelized." Well, I am certainly not ready to give up evangelizing active Presbyterians, much less active Roman Catholics, or anybody else.

My wife, to use a very personal example, went to the Presbyterian Church six times a week—all of her life! She was a soloist, she was a choir member, she played the piano, she taught Sunday School, her father was an elder—she was as active a Presbyterian as Paul was a Jew, and yet she was not saved!

I witnessed to her and someone else witnessed to her and finally she accepted Christ. I can tell you this, my wife would be very happy to stand up here and tell this audience that she is very happy that I did not assume that all Presbyterians, active Presbyterians, were Christians. I don't assume anything about anyone, and when we evangelize we use diagnostic questions.

Wouldn't it be foolish of a doctor to assume that all blondes are healthy, and therefore they don't have to be checked—they have good hearts, so they don't have to check their hearts. That would be very foolish. And we would be foolish to make such assumptions, so we ask diagnostic questions. We as evangelists, which every Christian is to be, should be spiritual physicians. We should ask diagnostic questions: "Do you know that you have eternal life? What are you basing your hope [on]? Why should God let you into heaven, if you were to die tonight?" So we find out. I don't care what the label on the person's back says, whether it says Presbyterian, Baptist, Catholic or Muslim, if that person is not trusting in Jesus Christ alone for his salvation—that person, in my opinion and I believe certainly in the historic opinion of all Protestant churches, is not really a Christian and is desperately in need of hearing the gospel and being saved. We have among the thousands of members of this church, thousands of them who have been active members of all kinds of churches, including Roman Catholics, who discovered years into their maturity, after 30, 40, 50, 60 years of active service in this church or some other church, that they really never really understood the gospel, they had never put their trust in Christ alone, and they had never experienced the saving power of the grace of God, which can not only declare us righteous in the sight of God, but it can change and transform our lives and make us new creatures and turn us around and start us off in a new direction, and give us a joy and a purpose and a meaning in our life that we never had before. That's what I believe every Christian ought to be doing—not checking to see the label in the coat before you decide to share the gospel with them, but finding out, diagnostically, in whom are they trusting for their salvation. And that is what I believe that the Great Commission commands everyone to do."

So the point is if you in fact think we are all of one flock (which I am sure there are certain elements here that do not think we are), then what is the harm of trying to reach people that need a deeper understanding of Christ?

I dunno there are a ton of "sheep stealers" here on the boards with thinly disguised innuendos, posts intended to try and poke holes in doctrines dogmas and ideas and some very blatant attacks as well. So before anyone starts shouting foul, I suggest you clean up your own forums, and repremand your own forum members for this practice before you cry foul here.

Now would I go to RCIA with the intent of using what I learned for the ability to refute Catholics? Yeah i would. But, I would be up front about it, and tell them that. Who else better to learn from than the source? Give TLE some credit, he did what he did instead of reading Jack Chick tracts or some of the fundie sites out there. He came and asked you questions adn you answered them. Now at anytime did you hope he would "see the light" and come home to the mother church? Of course you did...

    Hypocritical nonsense.

    JMHO.

And Mark, my friend bring as many people to JESUS as you can. And for those who know JESUS help them grow in their faith. And i will continue to pray for you!! And pray that sometime i really can join you as a missionary.
