The two state solution wasn't implemented yet. They are still rightly labeled "occupied territories". The Israeli government likes to say "disputed" rather than occupied but that's just semantics. Fact is the Palestinians do not have the national autonomy and sovereignty that real states have. Can they raise an army for example? Until they have real sovereignty the chances for long term peace are pretty low.

Photo: REUTERS Protesters stormed the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood's party in Alexandria on Friday, throwing chairs and books into the street and setting them alight, after the Egyptian president granted himself sweeping new powers.

Supporters of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and opponents also threw stones at each other near a mosque in the city, Egypt's second largest, a witness said.

Two cars had glass smashed as the clashes moved away from the area.
In Port Said, another port on the Mediterranean, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice party headquarters and pelted it with rocks. Some tried to storm it but did not enter, another witness said.

In Cairo, thousands demonstrated against the decree issued on Wednesday night.

Morsi called "pharaoh" for seizing new powers
Morsi's decree exempting all his decisions from legal challenge until a new parliament was elected caused fury amongst his opponents on Friday who accused him of being the new Hosni Mubarak and hijacking the revolution.
Morsi's aides said the decree was to speed up a protracted transition that has been hindered by legal obstacles but Morsi's rivals were quick to condemn him as a new autocratic pharaoh who wanted to impose his Islamist vision on Egypt.
"Morsi a 'temporary' dictator," was the headline in the independent daily Al-Masry Al-Youm and hundreds of protesters in Tahrir Square, the heart of the 2011 anti-Mubarak uprising, demanded Morsi quit, accusing him of launching a "coup".

In other news, the Zionist camp in Israel got a slight boost in the polls, despite widespread anger against Netanyahu for bowing to American pressure for an early ceasefire. US President Obama is also said to have promised the dispatch of American troops to bolster our force in Sinai.

Other than that, HAMAS has cut back on the number of rocket attacks on Israeli civilians. Not much has changed in the area. Syria is still engaged in a bloody civil war that makes Gaza look like a picnic. Israel's next action could very well be in the north.

Oh, as anyone noticed? Iran continues to enrich uranium, and to manufacture delivery systems.

I don't have a dog in this fight at all (I'm not Israeli, Palestinian, Jewish, Muslim or within 500 miles, the most recent trip that anyone in my family had to there was a great-uncle who was delayed in traffic while delivering some post to the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in 1946), but it does have to be said that if it was the intent of the IDF to wipe out the Gazans (as some have claimed) then they really did a terrible job of it.

Think about it for a second, there were more than 1500 airstrikes, plus naval and land-based artillary bombardment over the space of several days and the total number of killed is of the order of 160.

That works out as about ten airstrikes per fatality (civilian or millitant). That's absurdly low for avoiding all casualties. Let alone for one that's actually targetting the millitants and not just pulverising their infrastructure.

It is possible that Israel’s current leadership and Hamas may be in a
cooperative win-win situation for the coming period. Hamas needs time to achieve a number of goals:

#1. Renew and upgrade the missiles and other weapons it has so that in the next round they will be both more deadly and less subject to detection and destruction by Israel.

#2. Build on the results of the last round with Israel to extend the influence of Hamas in the West Bank.

There may be other benefits to Hamas in postponing the next round. Right
now they are at odds with Iran over their decision not to support Assad. If
the situation in Syria reaches a conclusion – in particular should Assad
fall – Iran will be very interested in showing that they still are teamed up
with leading “players” and not just secondary elements (eg. Islamic Jihad).

The Israeli leadership wants essentially only to show “quiet”.

While there may be Israeli talk about weapons smuggling – even possibly some headlines about a few weapons being intercepted by Egypt - the “quiet for quiet” Israeli demand relates only to the use of weapons – not their deployment. This goes beyond weapons and military infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.

It may also apply to security on the border. Hamas, for example, may very well take measures to prevent rioting on the border fence in order to facilitate conditions allowing Gazan farmers to work all the way up to the fence. The ability to prepare for the next round of war against Israel literally up to the fence without interference could be a deadly benefit for Hamas in the next round. But until the shooting start, the quiet fence will be cited by the Israeli leadership as a success.

To be clear – it is not that the Israeli leadership is knowingly jeopardizing the Jewish State’s security. They are confident that Israeli intelligence will effectively monitor all developments and that the IDF will be prepared to successfully address whatever challenges arise.

Or as the saying goes, “Yihyeh B’seder” (it will be ok).

That same "bully" was also pulled INTO that mess by pressure from the international front. Lots of pulling is going on there, on all fronts. It's like a hideous game of chess, from Sudan to Iran and beyond. The latest I read in DEBKA has Israel, Egypt and the US in an unholy alliance against Iran, Syria and Russia, with other players, of course, on both sides, and Gaza sort of in the middle.

Oh, I forgot. Did you have red roses in mind? or white? I see shades of 1485 lurking in the background.
