Italy, Spain, France, UK, and Germany are hit the worst in Europe. There are more deaths there than anywhere else in the world right now. Furthermore Austria and Germany may lift their lockdown on April 15th. The researchers have found New York and New Jersey are getting the European COVID-19 respiratory virus.

"Despite examining different examples of the outbreak, researchers from both teams reached largely the same conclusions about its origins, the Times reported.

"The majority is clearly European," Dr. Harm van Bakel, a geneticist and co-author of the Icahn School's study, told the newspaper.

Travelers likely carrying the virus had already been arriving in New York from Europe before Jan. 31, when President Trump limited entry by foreign nationals who'd been in China and March 11, when the president announced plans to block travelers from most parts of Europe, the Times reported.

On March 19, the newspaper reported that travelers arriving from Europe - where outbreaks in Italy and Spain were severe - were being asked at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport only if they had been to China or Iran, not if they had visited the hardest-hit nations in Europe.

"People were just oblivious," Dr. Adriana Heguy of the NYU research team told the Times.

Researchers need to track the history of the virus so they will be able to develop vaccines and modify them as the virus mutates into other forms, the report said."

We know the first case broke out in Wuhan at a seafood market. Coronaviruses have been around for a while. There may be an European COVID-19 as the other hard hit areas are in Europe and New York and New Jersey. The new findings are pointing to Europe.

I'm in California and when we were still in containment phase, we were are to track the ones in California to the people coming from China. Later, we had travel banned from Iran in the mitigation phase. People from Europe were still able to come in. Look at the numbers now. With this new information, we can see Europe is the country hardest hit along with New York and New Jersey.

We can't tell in California as to whether we have the Wuhan virus and the Europe one (assuming they are different) because our testing is weeks behind. We got the CDC test kits where 3 tubes are needed.

The news of two strains of COVID-19 respiratory virus is coming out now. Technically, there may be more but European one is more deadly imho.

Coronavirus likely came to the US first from Europe, circulating unseen among New Yorkers for weeks before the state's first case was diagnosed, and even before it arrived in Washington state, where the first American case was confirmed.

It's this European strain that's driven the majority of infections in the US, now concentrated in New York and the East Coast, not the strain of the virus most prevalent in China, according to a new analysis of viral genomes by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

A second strain struck the West Coast and likely arrived later from China, despite the fact that a man who traveled back to the US from China was the first identified American infected with COVID-19.

Separately, Cambridge University scientists found that there are three distinct strains of the virus that account for most of the world's cases.

This article explains that, though there may be more than one "strain" of covid-19, it is not the case that these strains are "Chinese" and "European". Why not an American strain or a New York strain? And opinions differ over whether one strain may be much more virulent than another.
