had I had a choice in the matter we never would have gotten that ball rolling. We have diplomats and avenues for discussion and debate already. The UN has proven to be largely ineffecive and irrelevant on most issues. One thing they do well is engage in corruption (like the oil for food fiasco) and stand against the US and our founding principles...which is why liberals typically support it.

Seriously........UN haters.......there are far bigger fish to fry if you're worried about your sovereignty. Look at the fine print in the WTO contracts nations bend to. Any nation which is a member of the WTO consents to have their laws struck down by the WTO is they stand in the way of international trade. The World Trade Organization has the legal right, to strike down your laws, if it means some coroporate interests will make a bit more money - and, nations which are members in the WTO are subject to allowing corporations file lawsuits against democratically elected gov'ts who act in favor of the people vs the corporations. How is this less of a threat than the UN? Compared to this the UN is a distraction at best!

Exactly why do any of you think that Jewish politicians are less evil than Moslem politicians . . . or American Christian politicians?

No, the point everyone has been weeping and wailing about is national sovereignty. The UN is a forum for nations, and is trying to create common ground among adversaries and have nothing but petty, nationalistic hatred for them. At worst they're a hopeless political tool.

All of that pales in comparison to the subversion which is being enacted through the WTO & IMF. Your democracy is being taken apart and sold to the highest bidder piece by piece, and you're whining about the UN. You're blind and arrogant, and willfully stupid. One day your country will be gone, and it won't be the UN's fault.

Then it must be really confusing to you, indeed, to hear your very own Republican president to constantly commend the U.N. for its work to promote freedom, expand opportunity, and reach out to those in need. Because, according to President Bush, the United Nations and the United States of America, share "the deepest commitments.". Quote, "Both the American Declaration of Independence and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaim the equal value and dignity of every human life. That dignity is honored by the rule of law, limits on the power of the state, respect for women, protection of private property, free speech, equal justice, and religious tolerance. That dignity is dishonored by oppression, corruption, tyranny, bigotry, terrorism and all violence against the innocent. And both of our founding documents affirm that this bright line between justice and injustice -- between right and wrong -- is the same in every age, and every culture, and every nation."

Clearly, neither the United Nations nor the United States of America has managed to quite lived up to these fine principals.

And that's the main dilemma with the United Nations. When individual states that make the United Nations fail, the United Nations fail. When individual states that make the United Nations fail to value the dignity of every human being in the name of the great war on terror or whatever, when they wage wars on their own citizens or those outside their borders, the United Nations fails. When individual states that make the United Nations fail to deliver, when they fail to protect their own citizens, guess who's supposed to ride in rescue? When a member state of the U.N. is encouraged by more powerful U.N. member states who themselves run huge military killing business from which they stand to profit handsomely, to buy weapons instead of food at times when its own citizens starve, whose fault is that?

Well, everyone in North America will make more money because there's no trade barriers, I won't get searched every time I go to Grand Forks, and nationalists will have one more thing to complain about.

Any country willing to start pre-emptive war without such "proof" of a threat are not all there in the head. I think the Bush Administration would have proved this to the world by now.
