They are noted in Scripture (those who prayed A LOT, whose lips praised God, BUT THEIR HEARTS were FAR FROM HIM), as HE Says.
Multitudes who "pray a lot", on Judgment Day, are told "be gone from ME, I never knew you" (all you did, you did for show, Jesus Says to them)
They are not condemned for praying a lot. They are condemned because their heart are far from them.
From my own experience, I can't imagine a person praying a lot and having his heart far from Him, unless one is praying a lot publicly. I think that is why Jesus said:
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:5
A person cannot be alone with God for a long time without something happening. One who prays publicly loves to flaunt to others how spiritual he is. He is being rewarded for his lip-service-only prayers by other admiring him. He is content. But a person who prays in secret, whether in form prayers, in his own words, in tongues, or in silence, will encounter God in secret.
Although prayer is what we need the most in our lives, our fallen nature makes it often the last thing we want to do. We really do not want to pray. We find other things to do instead of praying - watching TV, listening to our iPods, or go on a forum to talk about God. We rather spend hours talking to others about God than talking to God about others. In this, I must confess that I am also guilty. May the Lord forgive me. I think if we spend more time in talking to God than talking about God then we will see miracles we would never imagine as well as conversion of souls, and holiness in our lives.
The Bible says to pray without ceasing. We can never pray too much. No matter how much we pray we are still at most unprofitable servants.
