Is Dante's Inferno a bad book to read?

The illustrated version, which in the past was widely sold, will scare the pants off of you and be very hard to forget.

The Divine Comedy is pure classic poetry. Read the entire work and not just Inferno. Remember that it is an allegory and not theological truth (especially from the Orthodox point of view).

You should probably ask your priest.

If a person is not well formed in Orthodox theology, it could prove confusing at that point. Your priest may know if such would be the case for you or not.

for poetry and and its importance as a work of art, sure. for theology not so much.

I remember reading about half of Inferno and was confused at times, scared at others.

It's a great book. Don't read it as spiritual advice, necessarily. I'm not a fan of Rod Dreher, but he has a book about how awesome Dante is, and it's one thing I'll agree with him on.
