No, I'm not a good person. None of us are good. We are all sinners.
Christianity is all about Christ Himself. From our standpoint, it's not about us being good, it's about us humbling ourselves and acknowledging to God that we are not good and can't save ourselves and need His mercy and forgiveness.
I believe the following parable illustrates the contrast between people who exalt themselves and think they can be good enough to earn God's favor and people who humble themselves and acknowledge that they can't be good enough to earn God's favor.
Luke 18:9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ 14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
The Pharisee thought he was a good person and better than everyone else and thought that God would be impressed with His supposed righteousness. But, he did not acknowledge that he was a sinner just like those who he thought were inferior to him.
The tax collector, on the other hand, did not think he was better than anyone and could not even look up to heaven. He humbly acknowledged that he was a sinner and asked God for mercy. That is what God is looking for from us. He's not looking to be impressed by our supposed righteousness. That's impossible. He wants us to humble ourselves rather than exalt ourselves.
Isaiah 66:2 For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. 3 He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations. 4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
