I remember they used to call these cicadas 17 year locusts. They will hatch, eat, breed and die. They make for a loud chirping noise.View attachment 298111This is scary to me. These things will be in peoples hair and will be buzzing so loud that you can barely speak to someone without yelling. Billions of these things are coming out of the ground. This is so gross.
Don't know that they do eat much of anything, after 17 years sucking on roots, they are only out for one thing, making more Cicadas.I know they are in the trees but what do they eat. I’ve never seen damage to the trees here in the west.
They breed to come out again 17 years later? So are the ones who emerge young or are they 17 years old?I remember they used to call these cicadas 17 year locusts. They will hatch, eat, breed and die. They make for a loud chirping noise.
I hope not. Even if harmless, how gross to see them on everything and billions of them. Eww they are gross looking. Grasshoppers are harmless to people but you don't want to see billions of them . These look like huge flies. It seems to me it’s a biblical event. They didn’t say anything about it 17 years ago. It’s the pestilence that Jesus talked about in Matthew. It seems harmless to humans and the forest. There probably won’t be any in New York City.
See and to me thats gross. Then they serve no purpose. Hopefully birds eat them or something.Don't know that they do eat much of anything, after 17 years sucking on roots, they are only out for one thing, making more Cicadas.
Purpose, like every other critter on earth, their purpose is to make more of themselves.See and to me thats gross. Then they serve no purpose. Hopefully birds eat them or something.

Seems to me that calling your God's creation "gross"
shows a distinct lack of respect and appreciation.
Among other things.
I'm no Christian nor religious in any way,
I do though find it odd that Christians so
often have such contradictory attitudes.
I was taught to respect, not fear my fellow
beings. I stopped to rest one time
by a little shrine on a nature trail in Sai Kung.
At first, I did not notice a big cobra,
right there next to where I sat!
I watched it, it sometimes flickered its
tongue. The snake was deep brown,
with blue green iridescence.
A magnificent creature!
I knew it meant me no harm, and
it did not raise its head or spread its hood
as showing it thought I meant harm.
It's a cherished memory.
I hope you find a way to see the wonder
and beauty in your cicadas.
So much better than fear or disgust.
Cool. I'd to have that experience in my catalog ... as long as I had change of underwear. It's a cherished memory.
Didn't say anything about the event, or didn't say anything about it being Biblical? The former is so unlikely as to verge on impossible, the latter is also doubtful. What make you think "they" said nothing about it?It seems to me it’s a biblical event. They didn’t say anything about it 17 years ago.

I know this. You know this. I'm not sure @Unqualified knows this. An exchange of views may change that.It happens every 17 years and probably has been so
for thousands of years. Everyone who pays the
least attention knows that. Even here in HK.
Cicadas are totally unconcerned with people, Bible
or how anyone happens to feel.
Not everything is about you me the man behind
the tree or matters biblical.
Well, yeah, it wasn't addressed to you as, you know, such.I know this. You know this. I'm not sure @Unqualified knows this. An exchange of views may change that.
