Is Al Gore's global warming theory harder to convince people of when the climate is actually cold?

Why do those who believe in human-caused global warming always assume they are right about it (and everything else), but can't seem to fathom that they might actually be wrong?

On account of how it's not an assumption, it's a fact.

Same reason that I believe I'm held to the Earth's surface by gravity.

I'm assuming that's a joke.

Well, the thread I linked to is. It's not to the people who believe it though. They're dead serious. That's what makes it funny.

For the same reason that those who accept evolution can't seem to fathom they might be wrong. At this point the only remaining questions as far as APGW is concerned is how bad will the effects be and what good mitigating strategies can we come up with.

Assume?

It is as much an “assumption” as acceptance that:

- smoking increases cancer risk;
- vaccines prevent illness;
- we evolved;
- too much sodium is bad;
- etc.

It’s called respect for the overwhelming consensus of duly qualified experts.

We choose to get our information about climate from experts, not Pastor Cletus.

Then again the same folks who think global warming is a hoax also think that moon landing was, so yeah. Lol.

I've never claimed the moon landing to be a hoax, so you're making another assumption.

I never said that YOU did, Aldebaran. Make a visit to the conspiracy theory section right here on this forum. You'll see that the same folks who think that this is a hoax also think the moon landing was faked, vaccines cause autism, the earth is flat, 9/11 was a set up.

You said, "Then again the same folks who think global warming is a hoax also think that moon landing was". Well, I think the whole global warming/climate change thing is a hoax. However, I don't think the moon landing was, and I don't think the earth is flat, or any of those other things you mentioned.

But the ones who do think the earth is flat and that the moon landings were hoaxes claim that they base those beliefs on the Bible and their Christianity.

And they think they're better Christians than you because of it.

I meant that in the general way, Aldebaran. Not you, specifically. Again go visit the conspiracy theory section right here. Lots of the time folks ignorant about one thing with science are with others too. Lots of the same folks who think global warming is a hoax also think vaccines cause autism or other similar nonsense.

Who benefits if it is a hoax? Who is at the end of this gravy train you envision?

Because I can tell you who benefits if people are convinced it is a hoax. The big fossil fuel companies who dump millions of dollars into convincing people it isn't real and, if it is, they certainly cannot be seen as a cause.

...I've often wondered why there is a distinction based on geography. Any ideas?

That's a great question, but unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an easily found answer. A bunch of webpages I got hits for explain the different appellations, but don't give any reasons for why we have them.

The Online Etymology Dictionary has articles on all three words. Basically, they all developed locally and well and truly predate international naming conventions and the concept of Meteorological Bureaux. (OED entries can often be ‘opened up’ to see more detail by clicking on the entry word).

Cyclone was invented in 1848 by a British East India chappie as a name for a particularly vicious storm in India in 1789. He based the word on a Latinised form of a Greek word meaning ‘moving in a circle’ (think 'cycle', 'cyclic').

Typhoon is from an Arabic word passed on to Portuguese sailors by their Arab pilots in the mid-16th century. It comes from the Arabic tufan which, in turn, may have earlier Greek origins. There’s also a possible link to the Cantonese tai fung (big wind). Al-tufan is the term used in the Koran for Noah’s Flood.

Hurricane. A Spanish rendering of a West Indian word for sea storm, from the 1550s. Originally something like furacan. The word went through numerous spelling iterations before settling down to its modern form. Used by Shakespeare as hurricano in a couple of his plays.

I'd love to answer this question but it's dishonestly framed. I conclude that AGW is happening because of the evidence that we are warming and that is due to previously sequestered CO2 being released into the atmosphere because every other factor says we should be cooling.

If I were to change the words "human caused global warming" to "spheroidal earth" would it sound, would that sound or feel different?

Speaking of hurricanes/cyclones, there's one about to hit the north east coast of Australia. It's expected to reach Cat 3 as it hits the coast. After arriving at the coast it's predicted to move south, down the east coast, bringing bucket loads of rain and winds in excess of 220 km/hr.

At the same time there's a big low pressure area coming up from the south. Some predictions suggest that the daily rainfall in Victoria/Tasmania (south east corner of Aus) could exceed the monthly average.

So, we have a cyclone headed south along the east coast and huge storms headed north along the east coast.

Guess where I live?

Yep - on the east coast, slap bang in the middle. With any luck the storms will ease a little before they reach me. If not, I expect to hear this almighty Splat! as they collide in my front yard.:(

Now I know I don't believe in global warming.

The goats believe that God has His hand on the weather.

Nothing to fear to Him stay near.
