Iran shoots down US drone aircraft, raising tensions further in Strait of Hormuz

Iran shot down a United States military drone on Thursday, further escalating the already volatile situation playing out between Washington and Tehran in the Middle East.​

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it had shot down an "intruding American spy drone" after it entered into the country's territory Thursday.
A US official confirmed to CNN a drone had been shot down, but said the incident occurred in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most vital shipping routes.

That would be an act of war, would it not? Shooting down another countries aircraft in international airspace?

Perhaps but it would be an irresponsible reason to start a war over. Aggression doesn't demand immediate escalation.

The same thing we would do if Iran bombed a military base that nobody happened to be in at the time. Or if they bombed an airfield and destroyed a bunch of our planes on the ground.

US claims it was in international airspace, it probably was in Iranian airspace. The US is lying, they do not have a good track record when it comes to telling the truth about things happening in the Persian Gulf.

Yeah it seems like war with Iran would stand to benefit Israel and Saudi Arabia a lot more than it would ensure any security for the US.

No that is clearly an act of aggression and would rightly merit an escalated response.

Beats me! But it's been speculated that they're doing it in an attempt to raise oil prices. Remember also that they attacked with mines AND shot down our drone in the same incident. So that's two things they've done that are acts of aggression.

Wouldn’t be a problem if Trump hadn’t reneged on our agreement with Iran for them to disassemble their nuclear program, without even requiring Israel to give up their nukes which I thought would have and probably now will need to be the bedrock of any new deal with them. I’d like to tell the Republicans to clean up this mess they made but since that likely will only come with millions killed it looks like we need to vote Trump out and get someone with some degree of statesmanship in there.

Are we pretending that Israel doesn't have nukes already? I think if Iran had The Bomb they would be more likely to use it on the Saudis--which is why the Saudis want The Bomb as well, and why the Trump administration wants to give it to them.

This position ignores reality. The Iranian people want to love just as much as any human wants to live. To suggest that they would use a nuclear weapon in a haphazard fashion ignores the reality of the world we live in today. Nuclear weapons gets you left alone; every country that has them knows that, including the country that used nuclear weapons.

Trump would be stupid to do it. There was a percentage of the votes for him 2016 came from people who were disappointed in Obama’s inability to get the US out of Iraq and Afghanistan and saw Clinton as likely unable (or unwilling) to do it as well. Trump said he would get us out. Starting a war with Iran and those voters seeing their sons and daughters shipped out to the Middle East once again will lose Trump their vote Trump won by razor thin margins in 2016 and can’t afford to flippantly anger a group of his voters.
