I know many who frequent this Persecuted Christian forum are in various levels in ministries combating human trafficking. This is from DHS which helps with raising awareness of behaviors or signals of those who are in bondage, the victims of human trafficking.

Indicators of Human Trafficking

Recognizing key indicators of human trafficking is the first step in identifying victims and can help save a life. Here are some common indicators to help recognize human trafficking:

  • Does the person appear disconnected from family, friends, community organizations, or houses of worship?
  • Has a child stopped attending school?
  • Has the person had a sudden or dramatic change in behavior?
  • Is a juvenile engaged in commercial sex acts?
  • Is the person disoriented or confused, or showing signs of mental or physical abuse?
  • Does the person have bruises in various stages of healing?
  • Is the person fearful, timid, or submissive?
  • Does the person show signs of having been denied food, water, sleep, or medical care?
  • Is the person often in the company of someone to whom he or she defers? Or someone who seems to be in control of the situation, e.g., where they go or who they talk to?
  • Does the person appear to be coached on what to say?
  • Is the person living in unsuitable conditions?
  • Does the person lack personal possessions and appear not to have a stable living situation?
  • Does the person have freedom of movement? Can the person freely leave where they live? Are there unreasonable security measures?
Not all indicators listed above are present in every human trafficking situation, and the presence or absence of any of the indicators is not necessarily proof of human trafficking.

There is another kind of trafficking going on too, where young kids are treated like royalty basically. At least at first. And these people are working common neighborhoods to gain the recruits.

Watch out that your kid keeps slipping out of the house, maybe a few times an evening or gee I thought I heard a car door in the night..
Starts wearing nice cloths that you didn't purchase.
Seems to have extra spending money.

The next step is they are gone. Success rate of getting them back is about 30%.

Sounds like how the mafia bosses recruited neighborhood kids into their syndicate.

There was a movie I watched a while back, American Honey, about this magazine selling company that was contributing to kids delinquency, it was a grey area as to whether it was human trafficking or not, but there was plenty of abuse and coercion. It was one of those films that turned my stomach to watch. It turns out rackets like that are real, though state attorneys general are trying to stamp out those sorts of practices, there are not always clear laws.

Sounds like how the mafia bosses recruited neighborhood kids into their syndicate.

Less mafia, more like shady, unscrupulous businessmen.
