In post-Trump America, political affiliation is directly tied to life expectancy

As the nation celebrate its 245th birthday, it is increasingly and depressingly clear that America is becoming two very different countries: a blue one and a red one, with little in shared identity and vastly different health and economic outcomes.

Polarization is not just transforming American society — it’s literally killing people.

The cleavages in American society have become so extreme that where one lives and how one votes increasingly has life and death consequences. And no recent issue better exemplifies this phenomenon than the growing red state/blue state divide over Covod-19 vaccinations. The vaccine fight, rather than an outgrowth of Trump’s divisive presidency, is just another example of how polarization is not just transforming American society — it’s literally killing people.

The vaccine fight is definitely an outgrowth of Trump’s divisive presidency. From denying that the virus existed, to downplaying (even ridiculing) science, to recommending "cures" that don't work, to making false claims to when it would be over, to hiding his own COVID infection, etc.

Trump is personally responsible, not only for the spread of the virus, but also for the many, many deaths caused by people believing his lies. There is no question that losing the vaccine battle is a direct result of. Trump’s divisive presidency and his intentional ignoring of scientific advice and instruction when it was (and is) sorely needed.

I feel particularly sorry for the people living in the "red" states who are needlessly getting sick and dying because of what trump led them to believe.

Hey. Some people don't trust the government.

You nailed it, HT!

There's no titanic social change going on here, although I can see how it might look that way at first glance.

I, too, have been interested in this matter and so have tried to pay close attention to why the people who do not want to be vaccinated feel that way. It is primarily as you deduced yourself.

They do not trust the government when it comes to such matters, and who can blame them?? That POV is nothing new. What's more, it has been growing lately as both liberals and traditionalists have been claiming that the "deep state" or some other power brokers are actually running the government, not our elected leaders.

On the bright side, fewer and fewer people have been paying attention to the MSM's gaslighting of the "political divisiveness" that supposedly exists.

I think since the pandemic is largely behind us, we're seeing people leaving their homes, and leaving behind the blues of 2020. :)

It's not just Trump. While there are reasons from all perspectives to have some skepticism of government programs, Republicans have been beating that drum for decades. And large parts of evangelicalism have prepared people for conspiracy theories by denying evolution, astronomy, history, global warming, and other things, and associating them with a distrust of mainstream science and scholarship.

I think the fight against the vaccine was started by Democrats the minute Trump said "Operation Warp Speed".

We've all made our decision in regards to the vaccination... It's time to live with our decisions.

If only there were any reason presented to believe this feeling.
One of hundreds of examples.
"The federal government's response to COVID and the White House's dispute with the FDA raises serious questions about whether or not the vaccine has become politicized," Governor Cuomo said. "Frankly, I'm not going to trust the federal government's opinion and I wouldn't recommend to New Yorkers based on the federal government's opinion. We're going to put together our own review committee headed by the Department of Health to review the vaccine, and I'm appointing a committee that is going to come up with a vaccine distribution and implementation plan on how we will do it. New York's response to COVID has been a model for this country, and we should also be the model vaccination program for the country."

I think the fight against the vaccine was started by Democrats the minute Trump said "Operation Warp Speed".
That does not look consistent with the data. Last summer, 81% of Democrats said they would take an FDA-approved vaccine, while only 47% of Republicans said the same.

I'm not aware of any Democrats thinking Warp Speed was a bad idea. There were a couple of concerns:
* A few leaders seemed to have conflicts of interest, and a few of the companies contracted with didn't seem to have the appropriate background
* There wasn't a good plan to get shots into people's arms. States were left to scramble for resources on their own
* A few people said they wanted to look at evidence for effectiveness for themselves, because they thought the FDA had been politicized. While it's true that the FDA had been politicized to some extent, I don't think there was any serious doubt that their approvals were justified. This concern seems to have been mainly political, and it wasn't a lot of people saying it.

But I don't think anyone opposed putting lots of money into producing the vaccine as soon as possible
