A central point of an executive order President Trump signed on Wednesday — and a mainstay of his campaign speeches — is the view that undocumented immigrants pose a threat to public safety.

But several studies, over many years, have concluded that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the United States. And experts say the available evidence does not support the idea that undocumented immigrants commit a disproportionate share of crime.

Last year Canada admitted 39,000 Syrian/Iraqi refugees (compared to 11,000 by the USA). At this point I have not heard of a single negative incident involving them but I have heard plenty of positive comments including them starting successful new businesses. In my Scottish, French and Irish ancestry I have to admit that they all were illegal immigrants. They came here and shoved the aboriginal peoples aside. I am not sorry they came here but I am sorry for the treatment of those who owned this land.

Same. I've only heard nice things about them actually. Most of them are so desperate & so eager to please. Some retired people from our church went to some of the border towns to help out, & they had nothing negative to say either.

I'm an American in Canada so I think I'm an immigrant too. Yes, I'm legal but that's bc my parents work for a Fortune 500 company so I have advantages other kids don't.

In spite of some extremely negative past history Canada even accepts Americans. ;)

Time and time and time again, the findings show that immigrants, whether initially 'legal' or not, have a net positive impact upon the communities in which they settle.

But you can't tell that to the bigots. They'll always have a handy anecdote of the one immigrant that committed an horrendous crime...

You mean someone like George Washington who committed treason?

As the son of an immigrant - my parents came here legally -

are you speaking about immigrants or illegal aliens - because I really take exception in being bundled together with people who didn't take the time and effort to do things right.

Like my mom and dad did.

My parents came here legally too. And I don't take exception to it at all.

Perhaps you need a safe space?

Were your parents refugees, seeking shelter from a war torn homeland?

The closest we have here in Australia to illegal aliens are the so-called 'boat people' who have been fleeing to our island nation ever since the Vietnam War. As with other forms of migration, they have added to the fabric of our society in a positive way.

I have a safe place - it's my home. It is safe because I practice gun control - I hit what I aim at. Thanks for asking

Compare what your mom and dad had to go through to get legal placement in the US to what people have to go through today and you might change your mind. If your parents had immigrated today, they may have gone a very different route.

Yes.

Then I would have thought you would be sympathetic towards those who find themselves in a similar situation.

Believe or not people are allowed to have a different point of view. You would think people could stop and examine the reasons behind the statements too. You might come to find that sympathy and good reason is behind their point of view due to their experiences.

Sadly, arrogance takes that place. It's unbelievable. Someone that came from a war torn homeland, and came here compared to those that claim they have to be right...and the family that lived it have to be wrong.

Like my mom and dad did.

We have a home in South Florida where there is a very high concentration of both legal and illegal immigrants from Latin America and Cuba.

I can tell you from talking to my legal immigrant neighbors that they despise the illegals because they resent the fact that they did all the hard work and followed the law while the illegals broke the law but get all of the handouts.

This is misleading. The issue is illegal aliens who are committing a crime by coming into our country illegally

Not all of them do.

and staying here illegally

That's not a crime. Maybe it should be. But it's not.

as well as tax evasion

Payroll taxes work for them, like they work for you, except that they'll never get any SS benefits. They pay property taxes the way other people do, and they pay sales tax the way other people do. This is one of the reasons America makes a profit on illegal immigrants.

It must be so frustrating to go to a social agency and have them say "sorry, if you're not here illegally, you can't have any welfare."

Got a checkable source for that?
