Both inside and outside St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church on Sunday, the statement "Black lives matter" was said with conviction and met with opposition.

Outside, it was written on signs and chanted through megaphones by members of the community protesting remarks made late last month by the Rev. Theodore Rothrock calling Black Lives Matter organizers "maggots and parasites."

Those "Black lives matter!" chants were met with chants of "Go Father Ted!" from counterprotesters who oppose the suspension handed down to Rothrock and argue that he was speaking the truth.

Inside, during 9:30 a.m. Mass, "Black lives matter" was said just once by Bishop Timothy Doherty of the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana at the end of his opening comments to the more than 150 people attending.

At least the IndyStar put Fr. Rothrock's comments in context by quoting a larger section of his church bulletin message. Other media outlets here chopped it down to seem as though he was saying it about all protesters. I also support Fr. Rothrock; but think his words were ill chosen. That being said, it seems incredibly ironic that the people who hurl insults, rocks, bottles, fire-bombs, and sometimes bullets would be so thin-skinned about two provocative words hurled back at them. If you identify with Black Lives Matters but don't identify with the rioters and truly believe in justice then be the first to stand up to them and oppose their subverting your cause for their own personal goals.

Let's see how this plays out. I go to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and we were looking forward to having Fr. Rothrock as our pastor. That will probably not happen now. At the same time, Bishop Doherty is a thoughtful and wise administrator. I hope that he has taken this action to suppress the protests that have happened outside the church. We must all recognize that in a battle of ideologies as is happening now, the playing field is not level. There is a definite double standard on how things are reported. I would go so far as to say that we do not have a free press in this country since most outlets seem to be so biased to one opinion and try to vilify the opposition rather than have balanced reporting. Thankfully we have sites like LifeSitesnews that try to bring the pendulum back to center.
