Icon veneration

Discussion in 'The Ancient Way - Eastern Orthodox' started by heart of peace, Aug 1, 2009.

Do you put your actual lips to the icon when kissing it?

  1. Yes, always.

  2. Yes, only if I am one of the firsts to arrive and I don't see any lipstick stains.

  3. No, I just kiss very close to the surface.

I kiss the glass very lightly as I usually have lip gloss or light lipstick on at the time when I come into church in the Narthex, so I don't want to smudge a bunch of goop on the glass. And no, I'm not worried about germs. LOL

I always take a tissue and blot off my little bit of lip gloss or what have you a few minutes before time to go up with Communion. :)

The glass container for our icons in the Narthex are for switching the icon for whatever feast day or event it is for that Sunday. I think also the glass protects the icon from being marked up. We have Archangel Michael's icon next to that one that isn't in glass that we kiss also.

I just kiss the icon, and none are covered in glass. I do not wear lipstick at all.
