A new report from the UN's nuclear watchdog expresses "grave concern" that North Korea is continuing to develop its nuclear program, despite the regime's commitment to work towards denuclearization following June's summit in Singapore.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) wrote in the report published Monday that inspectors have not been granted access to key nuclear sites in North Korea, including the research facility at Yongbyon. The agency used satellite imagery and open-source reports to conclude that construction has resumed or continued at several locations in and around the site.

Donald Trump, presumably, since he tweeted that "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea."

I'm sure Trump is claiming "fake news," even when his own intelligence people are giving him the same reports. He's already shown he has no respect or faith in US Intelligence. Maybe if Putin tells him, he then might believe it.

So the IAEA reports that Iran is in compliance with the nuclear treaty and Trump goes ballistic and cancels the treaty.

Then the IAEA reports that North Korea is ignoring their nuclear agreement with Trump.

What will he do? I have no idea. His actions make no sense at all.

So the North Koreans remain players and cannot be trusted. Nothing new there!!

I cannot blame President Trump trying to resolve this one. Previous administrations are to blame for the depths of the problem but at least he tried to resolve it. It seems the military option and full removal of the regime is the only one that would work in practice but that would require full Russian and Chinese cooperation. The Chinese cooperation is contingent on tariffs (and a major change of mentality in the leadership culture which still somehow sees North Korea as an ally!!!!) and the Russian cooperation on whether the partisan dynamics of American politics right now will allow a deal and American and South Korean involvement dependent on whether the casualties of a war would be worth the end goal - probably not.

So overall it seems this weed is destined to grow until judgment day harvesting or a major war/catastrophe when it could be dealt with as a side issue.

Shame.

I figured they wouldn’t give it up. What country would?

Well, certainly not the country that repeatedly says they'll do X, Y or Z, it look like progress and then they throw it all away and back to square one.

Trump has been nicely backed into a corner.

After claiming a successful commitment to nuclear disarmament in his talks with North Korea he must either:
  • publicly acknowledge that he was fooled
or
  • pretend that all is well in spite of any evidence to the contrary.

Given Trump's personality - what's your bet?

Until "judgment day harvesting"?

So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn. Matthew 13:27-30

The basic idea being if you try and deal with the bad guys now rather than later too many good guys end up getting hurt. But there will be a reckoning.

I kind of figured they were just placating with pretty words and no real intent to change anything.

That's what you guys have been saying for the last 2 milennia.

It has been true both historically and in the future sense for 2000 years.

For example historically the evil empire of the Soviet Union could have been nuked by the Americans after the war but then millions of people would have died. Instead it collapsed on its own without bloodshed 40 years later.

Add in Muslims and Jews and most of the world believe in a day of reckoning. A judgment day yet to come.

I think you are kidding yourself here. For all that you claim, "Previous administrations are to blame for the depths of the problem," how has Trump done any better? Yes, you can give him credit for trying to help -- but at the same time you have to admit he gave North Korea a huge PR victory -- a meeting with an American President and an end of US/South Korean wargames -- and North Korea gave up nothing, really, at all. All they did is make vague promises, which they have done before; sent more remains, which they have before (though not all turned out to be human remains); and made it temporarily appear they were going to quit their research -- most of which was because of an accident at their research facility last year.

If you criticize previous administrations for the "North Korea problem" then you have to come down doubly hard on Trump, he gave up as much or more than any previous president and got almost nothing in exchange.

we better get rid of these nukes all around the world or at least use them on hostile aliens in a way where nukes only hurt hostile aliens on our planet turf because if there is really ever nuclear war which is not swords and guns-nukes will rampage across the world destroying all things or something very bad which is a lot worse than swords and guns obviously. guns are one thing, nukes are another. we shouldn't turn our attention towards nukes...none of us humans...
