I just finished reading the bible. i am a little confused, is God and jesus the same or are they different entities?

The problem is that the full titles aren't being used.

God is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each can also be called God on their own.

So there is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Jesus is God, but Jesus is not God the Father because he is God the Son.

We have God The Father, who is One with God the Son and God the Spirit, One God with three personalities in it. Father, Son And Holy Ghost.

The Father gives glory to the Son, The Holy Spirit to The Son and the Son to The Father. This is why we talk about the Holy Trinity as one God.

John 14 is a really interesting read because all of the three God heads are mentioned in one context - God living in our Hearts.

Verse 15 "If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. "

and verse 23 "Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them."

Peace

Hello James, I see that you are a brand new member, so first off, WELCOME TO CF

As for your question, the Bible teaches us that there is only one God, but it also tells us that this one and only God exists, both from and to everlasting, as three different/distinct Persons. We, in fact, baptize in the "singular" name of God, and that singular name is, "the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit" .. Matthew 28:19.

The doctrine of the Trinity was formulated by the church to circumscribe and safeguard the truth that the Bible teaches us about the nature of the Godhead, not explain it, as that is simply beyond any of us (at least on this side of the grave anyway). It’s called a Biblical "mystery" because, even though we cannot fully comprehend it with our finite minds we, nevertheless, know that it is true (because the Bible tells us that it is :preach:).

Here's a diagram that may help, and a funny video from our friends at Lutheran Satire, that takes a humorous but correct look at what the Trinity is "not" (and why analogies, like ice/water/vapor, are never capable of explaining it properly .. enjoy :)).

Here you go:

God bless you!

Anyone who says that they truly understand God is deluded. How to explain it? I will try.
First up, God is God. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. They are one yet appear in 3 forms and have different roles. I think of it like water. Ice, liquid water and water vapour have the same chemical composition. They can be present at the same time. Yet to us they appear different. It's not a perfect analogy because God is a Person, not a thing.

That's somewhat debatable. It's made clear that they work with and though each other. Jesus said I and the Father are one. John calls Jesus the Word and says the Word was God. Jesus worked through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit intercedes with us when we're praying to the Father. Jesus talked about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. And there's many other examples. So it seems a reasonable conclusion a symbiotic relationship that exists between the three.

Here's a good lecture on the subject of the Trinity:

thank u all, my question really came from the concern of who to pray to? and i searched and found this:

When I need to address my prayers to my teacher, my savior, the one who’s walked on this earth and knows firsthand my struggles, then I pray to Jesus.

When I’m praising and worshipping, asking forgiveness and accepting grace, asking for guidance or praying for the needs of others, I usually pray to God.

Praying in the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit has a unique role in prayer. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us, helps us pray, and even prays for us when we don’t have the words.

Does this sound right?

Jesus taught us to pray to the Father. Matthew 6:5-14

Paul talks of an intimacy with God that we call out Abba Father, which basically means "daddy" Romans 8:12-17

We ask of the Father in the name of Jesus John 14:12-14

I'd say to read all of John 14.

But I think you have a good handle on it.

Can you explain that a bit more? Is God a person or persons (plural)?

1. Jesus IS God, so there's no Jesus OR God involved with this.

2. As for praying, what did Jesus say about it? The answer is that he said to pray to the FATHER ("Our Father, who art in heaven....")

3. And he also said to ask in his (Jesus') name.

THEREFORE, pray to the Father and conclude your prayer by adding that you are asking or whatever...in Jesus' name.

They are different entities with the same authority. Jesus was not praying to Himself when He hung on the cross or was in the wilderness and God was not talking to Himself when He said " This is My Son with whom I am well pleased." God the Father, the Almighty gave Jesus the Authority but Authority comes from the Father. The Holy Spirit is the Holy Spirit of the Father, and all 3 have existed since the Creation of the world.

To avoid thinking the singular GOD has a split personality it is better maybe to say one GOD with three PERSONS in unity, :)

Yes. And the word "personalities" in the post you are referring to certainly is misleading to begin with.
