Was it the same for the brethren in the UK back in the mid-70s when the 'Jesus Music' era began to impact pop-culture? Randy Matthews was one of my go-to musicians.
I can't remember much of the music in the early 70s, as I was still just a foetus! :) lol
In my early days in the church, I was raised on Sunday school songs, the songs we used to sing in school assemblies (mostly from the "Come and Praise" songbook, and some of the traditional hymns we sung in church from our Anglican hymnbooks.
The late 80s, 90s and early 00's were a great time for contemporary church music. New songs were coming out all the time and they were usually very good. Catchy, very memorable, and easy to sing along, as individuals and as congregations. Being in a worship group, playing these songs was always great fun and they gave us such joy.

I don't think Randy Matthews got to our side of 'the pond'.
Quite sure of it as Randy scaled back off the national scene after only two albums.
I do remember Carmen, Striper, Maranatha, and the Come Together musical.
They were all so enjoyable and excellent scores nationally. But that first wave that hit the states was about 10-yrs before them as shown here some of those faces,

an old hymn, feel free to sing along.

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am his own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

He speaks and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing

And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am his own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

:Oh,precious is the flow that makes me white as snow. No other fount I know,nothing,but the blood of Jesus!'
What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

For my pardon this I see--
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
For my cleansing this my plea--
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Nothing can my sin erase
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
Naught of works, 'tis all of grace--
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace--
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
This is all my righteousness--
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

So beautiful

After my rather awful rendition of Noel Nouvelet recorded using my Yahama piano's cheesy "church organ" preset, I am sure the whole company of heaven would have been cringing with embarrassment!

Nevertheless, it is a very touching melody and many great hymns have been written based on it. Here is one of my favourites:

Jesus Christ is waiting, waiting in the streets;
no one is his neighbour, all alone he eats.
Listen, Lord Jesus, I am lonely too.
Make me, friend or stranger,
fit to wait on you.

Jesus Christ is raging, raging in the streets,
where injustice spirals
and real hope retreats.
Listen, Lord Jesus, I am angry too.
In the Kingdom’s causes
Let me rage with you.

Jesus Christ is healing,
healing in the streets;
Curing those who suffer,
touching those he greets.
Listen, Lord Jesus, I have passion too.
Let my care be active, healing just like you.

Jesus Christ is dancing, dancing in the streets,
where each sign of hatred
He, with love, defeats.
Listen, Lord Jesus, we should triumph too.
On suspicion’s graveyard
let us dance with you.

Jesus Christ is calling, calling in the streets,
‘Who will join my journey?
I will guide their feet.’
Listen, Lord Jesus, let my fears be few.
Walk one step before me; I will follow you.

I'm normally a very reserved and quiet chap and find myself at home with more liturgical/reflective styles of worship. But sometimes I just have to let myself go,and especially in my current situation, it is songs like this that really help me to give thanks to God for all the good things he has done in my life.

I always like to sing along these kind of songs (hillsong) are little bit easier to sing along to me than traditional church songs, and they have wonderful power in them too. Sure it’s good in the sight of God to let go Anthony and even shout for joy :) Praise the Lord.

My soul, bear thou thy part,
triumph in God above,
and with a well-tuned heart
sing thou the songs of love;
let all thy days
till life shall end,
whate'er he send,
be filled with praise.
