  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Am I the only one who hates this idea? I don't want my husband to be my child, or a child, and I'm glad to say that he doesn't act like one. Why would this be acceptable to some husbands/wives to have this kind of interaction, or belief, or find this humorous?

It is a media put down of men. Fairly common. Think of all the husbands in commercials who are shown up/shamed/made to look incompetent by their wives/girlfriends.

But it's not just "media" that propels this sort of idea. Oddly......I see it coming from people that identify with the belief that God gave men "authority". Doesn't that seem like an unfitting pair of beliefs? That men are both "like a child" and "authorized to make the decisions"?

Yeah - that seems quite double minded.

I've always found it baffling that black folks and/or women believe in Christianity at all since the bible clearly endorses both the subservient position of women and the subjugation and enslavement of others.

But.. indoctrination is a powerful force and you can get a child to believe pretty much anything if enough people tell it to them often enough.

Any man that acts like a child is mentally deficient.

Some people read the Good News to be what you're describing----however, there are more "black folks" and women that realize the Good News is more about God "setting captives free" as He demonstrated in Exodus (and all through the rest of the Bible as well). Some people just have a different pair of glasses is all. How culture has been over the years doesn't mean that's how God "wants it". We have cancer running rampant in this world (as well as a LOT of other diseases)---just because it's present doesn't mean it's "God's will" (not in my belief, anyway---I realize others have a different view, and they're entitled to that as well).

I realize there are a lot of people (probably the vast majority) who take the good idea's and brush the garbage aside.. but still.. its right there in black and white, written in a book that most believers hold high....

I think it's degrading to both men and women. It's not an adult relationship.
I would tend to agree.. but its between two adults and not the business of anyone else.. There are actually fetishes where one spouse actually wears a diaper and pretends to be a baby.. not hard to find extremes in most any subject. So long as it doesn't have any quantifiable harm to the larger community, I say live and let live.. none of my business.

I don't care about people's fetishes, which tend to be kept private, but I do care about an attitude that is spread widely, laughed about, and generally "approved." You may not have kids and therefore no responsibility for the next generation, but I do, and this kind of sexist nonsense does cause harm.

I am a parent. What is it specifically that you're referring to when you say "spread widely, laughed about and approved" ??

I have to assume its not really Wilma and Fred right? As for the caption, if that's what you're talking about, its not spread widely or generally approved.. although the comical aspect may be laughed at..

As someone else commented on this thread, this attitude is fairly well approved in the media. It's not 'comical' to denigrate either men or women. It is harmful for a wife to behave as her husband's "mother" and for a man to accept passively being his wife's "child." Adults should be adults and take equal responsibility for their actions. The attitude expressed in this 'cartoon' entirely discourages adult behavior.

I've even heard things similar said from a pulpit of a church---or at weddings--- by the officiant. It's definitely spread too widely and too often (and not something I find comical).

What's most surprising is that the people laughing at this claim that "those liberal feminists" are their enemy....because "they HATE" men ("they" being feminists). To me.....this sure isn't "loving men" or encouraging them....or thinking very highly of them. It's sort of mind boggling.

Well there's a problem.. Our family hasn't watched television for over a decade. Its not that we don't have a 60 inch led tv on the wall for movies and other entertainment, just that we don't subscribe to any public or cable television channels. If we want to watch something, we transfer a file to a USB drive and stick it in.
Life is much better without main stream television.

But its not harmful to the community.. only those who participate in that type of behavior... and even that's debatable.

Obviously I differ in my beliefs.
Consider all the things that are in the public eye that could be considered harmful..
Drugs being advertised for sexual performance or medical conditions, violent movies, political attack ads, religious ads and statements.. the list goes on and on almost to infinity.

Its freedom of speech.. the only way to combat against the constant flood of horse manure is through knowledge and education.. an in depth understanding and a thorough comprehension of how and why the environment we live in works. Once you have that, things don't bother you so much.. That's what I have experienced and what I believe. Everyone is different I guess.
At least you're a concerned parent..

There's a difference between "public eye" and community.

And it's my freedom of speech to say that this garbage is offensive and dangerous. And it does bother me, and will continue to bother me for the reasons I've already stated.
