How Systemic Racism Continues to Determine Black Health and Wealth in Chicago
There is a 30-year gap in the life expectancies of Black and white Chicagoans depending on their ZIP code. On average, residents of the Streeterville neighborhood, which is 73% white, live to be 90 years old. Nine miles south, the residents of Englewood, which is nearly 95% Black, have a life expectancy of 60.

Journalist Linda Villarosa says the disparity in life expectancies has its roots in government-sanctioned policies that systematically extracted wealth from Black neighborhoods — and eroded the health of generations of people. She writes about her family's own story in The New York Times Magazine article "Black Lives Are Shorter in Chicago. My Family's History Shows Why."
An enlightening article. If you want to participate in this discussion, please actually read and discuss the topics written in the article or in the linked New York Times Magazine article that discusses this topic more in depth.

Has to be about the undefined so-called "systemic racism", right?

Couldn't have anything to do with the crime rate in Englewood area, right??

Spoken like someone that didn't read the article.

Come back when you're ready to have a discussion.
How about you define "systemic racism"? You clearly have not, despite being asked to numerous times. Lots of vague nonsense.

Is your "systemic racism" responsible for the Englewood life expectancy of 60? Or perhaps could it be actual data involving high levels of violent crime? With a 95% black population, is "systemic racism" responsible for violent crimes at 648% above the national level?

The white population of Englewood is only 1.28%. Are they the ones doing all this crime and making living conditions less desirable then other areas?? Sorry, you can't blame the white folk for this one. Nor the fairy tale called "systemic racism" that they get blamed for.

Let me know when you take off your monochromatic glasses and see the world as it actually is, not as you think it is.

How Systemic Racism Continues to Determine Black Health and Wealth in Chicago

More propaganda and narratives

There is a 30-year gap in the life expectancies of Black and white Chicagoans depending on their ZIP code. On average, residents of the Streeterville neighborhood, which is 73% white, live to be 90 years old. Nine miles south, the residents of Englewood, which is nearly 95% Black, have a life expectancy of 60.

If black people stopped shooting and killing black people in Chicago the average life expectancy in that city would increase substantially. If BLM is truly interested in improving the lives and life expectancy of black people they would be working to solve this problem.

systematically extracted wealth from Black neighborhoods — and eroded the health of generations of people.

Interesting statement but where is there any evidence to justify it?

"Many of the people at the time bought them at inflated prices. So it was hard to keep up the payments. And you didn't have any equity in your home."

That is simply untrue and shows a lack of understanding of real estate financing, even under a contract for deed the purchaser has equity and can sell the property, pay off the contract and keep the difference between the sales price and debt, which is their equity. By the way if any of us fails to make our house payment we are subject to losing our home, no discrimination there. And property values in high crime and industrial areas are justifiably lower than more desirable residential areas, nothing discriminatory there, just the market facts.

But if the people who were the nurses or the people who were like the bacteriologists and the people who are more educated had more money, had more savings, had more wealth left, then it left the neighborhood with fewer resources and the tax base is worse.

So discrimination did not stop people from moving up and out, that seems to invalid the discrimination narrative.

there is something about the lived experience of being Black in America that weathers the body. And this is the theory of Dr. Arline Geronimus from the University of Michigan. And she believes that the high-effort coping of dealing with racism in America makes the body prematurely aged. And so if your body is older, then you're more susceptible to every kind of health problem.

Interesting assertion but totally unsupported by any evidence

And then finally, there's discrimination in health care that has gone on for centuries. We've known about it. It causes problems when you enter the health care system, and it also causes people to avoid the health care system.

Again interesting assertion but without evidence.

There was a myth — and I say "myth," but it was not exactly a myth because it was widely believed by physicians and scientists,

A myth is a myth, the 1619 project itself is a myth.

Did you miss the whole “part of the stuff that you do not think is ‘systemic-racism’ (poorer healthcare for black citizens)” portion in order to jump to the conclusion that the lower life expectancy is because “they’re always killing each other”?

Where is the systemic racism, I have yet to see any evidence for it, we are in a nation that had a black president and now vice president but there is this supposed systemic racism, where, I say again where is the evidence for it?

Black people (for whatever reasons), aren’t getting as good healthcare as their white counterparts and you’re still looking for the systemic racism?

That’s what systemic racism looks like in the healthcare industry.

Read the thread I posted an answer to that "article"which was in itself a waste of time. AND once again where is the systemic racism, why all the effort to avoid answering the question, could it possibly be that there is no evidence, none at all?

In my city in order to get black people to get vaccinated they had to send people out door to door to personally invite people to please come down and get injected. People have to take responsibility for their own health care instead of waiting for people to hold their hands and give them a special invitation to take responsibility for themselves. The health care is available, if people elect not go to the doctor that is not systemic racism.

Try reading the link in post 11 and see if you can imagine why black folk might shy away from healthcare that under estimates their pain and suffering.

I cannot understand how making a conscious decision to avoid needed medical attention is promoted as being a victim of racism.

The violent crime rate is 650% higher than the national average.

If anyone genuinely believes that the "stress" of racism is prematurely aging people, they should consider the stress of living in one of the most violent neighborhoods in the state.

I did not miss the fact that there is absolutely no evidence of systemic racism in that propaganda. If someone is not receiving health care, it is their own decision not to go to the hospital that is causing the problem, is it possible to be systemically racist against yourself? NO, but it is possible to assert being the victim of something that has yet to be proven to even exist.

And you have no idea why that would be do you?

Do you know even a little of the history of black people's experiences with the government and healthcare?
